Notice the freedom that comes from the smallest details.
In Uttanasana, the shape looks like we are going down.
And yet it's the rise that must not be neglected while we fold.
So how do we rise while we fold?
Uttanāsana is often translated as rising upward, going beyond self-imposed limitations.
It's a checking of the downward pull.
A refusal to be taken only by gravity, mood, habit, and old stories.
In Uttanasana, the descent is a reversal.
The crown of the head offers itself to the earth.
Then the tailbone rises to receive light.
While the feet root.
The spine lengthens as the upper body descends.
Effort in the front body.
Softening in the back body.
A steadiness that makes space.
In the language of energy, the downward-moving current, apana, reverses and moves upward.
As if the body is remembering another direction.
A direction of humility and devotion.
