The role of the urologist/andrologist in the ICSI procedure
In the ICSI procedure (intra-cytoplasmic s***m injection), the urologist 👨⚕️ with expertise in andrology plays an essential role in identifying and managing the causes of male infertility.
📋 Patient evaluation is the first step. The urologist recommends detailed investigations to determine if there are s***m in the ej*****te or if an intervention is necessary to harvest them. These include hormonal analyses 🧪, testicular ultrasound and sometimes genetic investigations 🧬.
❗ If no s***m are found in the s***mogram (azoos***mia), the urologist intervenes surgically 🔬 to obtain them directly from the testicle or epididymis, using methods such as PESA, TESA, TESE or micro-TESE. The choice of the technique is made depending on the cause of infertility and the clinical aspects of each patient.
🔑 Harvesting viable s***m is a critical step in the success of ICSI. The urologist's experience in these procedures increases the chances that the embryologist 🧫 will have quality biological material for oocyte fertilization.
🤝 Finally, close collaboration between the urologist, the fertilization specialist and the embryologist is fundamental for a correct and efficient course of the couple within the infertility treatment.
