Ας higher your s*x hormone levels as lower your biological age. Only for men!

Older men who have higher levels of s*x hormones tend to have a lower biological age, according to a new study presented at the 2019 Endocrine Society annual meeting. The study was conducted at the University of Western Australia‘s medical school in Perth.

It is well known that not all of people age at a similar rate and despite having the same chronological age they look different. This is because their chronological age may be different from the biological age. Biological age refers to how old our cells really are and therefore, determineς our real age. Subsequently, slower biological aging is a measure of a person’s ability to remain healthier and live longer.

One way to measure biological age is the length of telomeres, which are DNA-protein complexes located at the end of chromosomes that shorten with age, leading to cellular dysfunction. Past research shows that stress, smoking, obesity, lack of exercise and poor diet can also shorten telomeres.

S*x hormones on the other hand are substances of youth which however, decline beyond doubt while we are getting older. The researchers wanted to see if s*x hormones such as testosterone and its active metabolite, estradiol, may reflect or possibly determine biological youth.

Interestingly, it was found that the higher the estradiol level, the longer the telomeres were likely to be, indicating lower biological age. In men estradiol occurs after peripheral conversion of testosterone. Although no cause effects could be inferred from this kind of studies, it could be interesting to see if the administration of testosterone, which is then converted to estradiol, could have also a favorable effect on biological age by modulating the length of telomeres. This could open new avenues for the use of testosterone in older men with low testosterone levels

Age related changes in muscle function (strength, power).

Muscle mass decline with aging is associated with a similar decrease of muscle strength. Which affects mainly the powerful muscle contraction. It appears, that muscle knee strength reaches its peak around 30 years of age. Then remains stable until the age of 50 years and afterwards declines with a rate 12 to 15% per decade.

Similar rates of muscle strength decline were reported in different muscles tested, as ankle, elbow flexor and extensor and grip strength. Muscle strength starts to decline from the 4th decade of life at an annual rate varying according to muscle tested. The decrease of growth hormone and testosterone levels with aging may contribute to the deterioration in our muscle strength with age.

Additionally, muscle power which is the product of the force and the speed of muscle contraction, declines with an even higher speed. Taking into account that muscle power is closely associated with physical performance, the decline of muscle power with aging is of particular importance. So all muscle performance characteristics (mass, strength, power) decline with ageing.

Consequently, anti-aging therapies which could deal with the inevitable decline of our physical function as we get older, is of high importance.

We are going to live longer but are we also going to live healthier? The answer is rather not. This is because of a progressive age-related decline in our exercise capacity and muscle strength.

Growth hormone and testosterone, the two main hormones in men are of paramount importance for the preservation of our exercise capacity and well-being.

As a doctor with a special interest in hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in men, I have created a state of the art: men’s anti-aging hormone replacement health clinic.

Aim & Vision

I always try to apply excellence and precision in my everyday clinical practice. I am considered an expertise in hormone replacement treatment in elderly men. I gained this feature by formulating the scientific background in a series of studies as demonstrated above and scientifically supporting my findings through publications and in scientific panels.

Thus, I have decided to apply these evidence based medicine in a more systematic way in my clinical practice. While my main interests are thyroid disease, diabetes, pituitary adrenal and gonadal diseases I am focusing now on creating a state of –the- art clinic on hormone treatment in men.

Taking into consideration the inevitable decline in our quality of life and physical function while we are getting older and the importance of hormones to this, hormone replacement therapy has inevitably to be tried as a meaningful means of ameliorating our physical decline with age by physicians with strong background in this field.
