Using Atropine for Cycloplegic Refraction May Avoid Overestimation of Premyopia in Children
This agent yielded a prevalence of 8.7% vs. 21.6% with cyclopentolate in a recent study. Yet, a commentary raises questions regarding accuracy and practicality.

While the study's findings suggest that atropine results in more accurate refraction measurements, the commentary posits that atropine could simply measure more hyperopia or less myopia rather than providing accurate refractive error determinations; in other words, a higher cycloplegic refractive error with atropine does not necessarily correlate with better accuracy.

Moreover, while there is a theoretical advantage to identifying premyopia, the commentators argue that the negative side effects of blurred vision that lasts for a week and the time required to achieve full cycloplegia may lead many to find a daily regimen of 1% atropine eye drops impractical.

Emerging Guidance from DEWS III
Let’s see the latest recommendations for our patients besieged by dry eye.

The DEWS III report emphasizes the complex interplay between tear film abnormalities/instability, inflammation, increased osmolarity, neurosensory abnormalities and environmental factors. Distinctions between aqueous deficient disease and evaporative disease have been clarified, focusing on the role for metabolic, hormonal, physical, neural and cellular stressors.1 Inflammation and immune responses play a central role contributing to ocular surface damage and neuropathic pain that exacerbate symptoms and complicate management.

is a rare eye cancer that forms in the retina and is most common in children younger than age 5 — but in rare cases it can develop in older children and adults affecting 1 eye or both. Parents often notice signs when they take a photo of their child using a flash and see a white pupil. Other signs include:

• Crossed eyes or 1 eye that drifts in a different direction
• Eye pain, swelling, or redness
• Watery or teary eyes
• Poor vision

Did you know that your eyes rely on certain nutrients to stay healthy?

New research in mice shows the way the eye processes glutamine (a common amino acid) is crucial for maintaining retinal structure and function.

When this process is disrupted, the retina thins and photoreceptors (the cells that detect light) begin to fail. Scientists believe this pathway could open new doors for treating vision loss caused by retinal diseases.

Eating a diet rich in fruits and veggies doesn’t just help keep your heart healthy – it helps your eyes too!

Good nutrition is important for good vision. Just like your heart, your eyes rely on tiny arteries for oxygen and nutrients. So eating fruits and veggies rich in vitamins and minerals can help your body and your eyes stay healthy.
