Meet José.
José is a young boy from one of our communities in rural Guatemala who spent most of his childhood in pain, Often unable to walk, run, or play… not because he didnt want to, but simply because his body wouldn’t let him.
For years, José’s legs and joints slowly changed. Walking became harder. His posture shifted. Pain became part of everyday life. In the place where he lives, specialized doctors, imaging, and therapy don’t exist. When something hurts, families often just learn to live with it.
Until someone showed up.
Through one of our medical missions, José was finally seen by doctors who took the time to listen, examine him, and create a real plan. He was diagnosed with a rare bone condition that had gone untreated for years — and for the first time, he didn’t just hear what was wrong… he heard that something could be done.
Since then, José has been receiving physical therapy, orthopedic care, and proper follow-up. His posture has already improved. His pain has decreased. He is walking stronger, standing taller, and slowly getting back pieces of his life that pain had taken away.
But the most beautiful change isn’t only in his body.
José recently shared that before receiving care, he felt like life had nothing left for him. Today, he dreams of becoming a doctor — so he can help other children who grow up feeling invisible, just like he once did.
This is what happens when healthcare reaches places that have been forgotten.
This is what medical missions make possible.
If you’ve ever wondered whether showing up matters… José is your answer.
