Some of the most meaningful moments in our Yoga Teacher Trainings happen beyond the mat.

Last week, our group stepped into a Temazcal together — a traditional Mayan sweat lodge ceremony, followed by a refreshing cold plunge on the shores of Lake Atitlán. 🌺

Temazcal is a powerful practice for cleansing the body, softening the mind, and reconnecting with what’s essential. Inside the heat, guided by intention and breath, students release physical tension, emotional weight, and stored energy.

In the cold plunge afterward, the body wakes up, circulation increases, the mind sharpens, and the whole system resets.

These experiences are part of the practicum because they remind us that healing isn’t only theoretical… It’s lived.
It’s community.
It’s presence.
It’s learning through the body — not just studying with the mind.

A reminder that transformation can be as simple as heat, breath, cold water, and people who hold the journey with you.

Learning and growing in community is so much more potent 🫶

Our students get time to do hands on teaching, training and practicing on one another and these moments help propel them forward in a way that is so special!

Let’s grow together ✨💕

🌿 Learning Through Experience: Eran’s Return to India

Eran returned to study directly with his 15-year Ayurvedic teacher, Dr. Mahesha, reconnecting with the roots of authentic, clinical Ayurveda.

This trip has been a deep immersion in hands-on treatments, ancient techniques, and the kind of wisdom that can only be passed from teacher to student through direct experience.

One of the therapies he received is Netra Tarpana, a traditional Ayurvedic eye treatment designed to nourish, soothe, and rejuvenate the eyes.

In Netra Tarpana, a dough “well” is gently formed around the eyes and filled with warm medicated ghee.
As the eyes bathe in this herbal ghee, the treatment works to:

✨ Reduce eye strain & dryness
✨ Support vision health
✨ Calm the nervous system
✨ Soothe tension stored around the face
✨ Strengthen the ocular muscles
✨ Balance excess Vata connected to overstimulation & screen fatigue

In a world where our eyes are constantly working — screens, stress, movement, light. This practice is a reminder of Ayurveda’s timeless truth:
healing is a return to nourishment, simplicity, and care.

Eran continues to study and bring this ancient knowledge back to Shamana, weaving it into the holistic healing, teachings, and trainings we offer here at Lake Atitlán.

If you’re curious to learn more about Ayurvedic practices, rituals, or trainings, stay tuned; more is unfolding. 🌿✨

Come home to yourself ✨

What does that look like for you? It's so different for each of us. Feeling like you are connected with your body and spirit as one is such a blessing but it's something that has to be cultivated.

How can you connect deeper with your spirit and your body? For some its through dance, or yoga, or meditation and for others its simply just being in silence with yourself. However it may look for you, to come back home to yourself especially in moments of challenge is the best thing you can do for YOU.

There's no right or wrong way, just feeling what you need in each unique moment to be authentically you and feel at peace with yourself. 👐✨💖

This is something we embody at Shamana, through all our our practices we aim for our students to connect deeper with themselves, their bodies and spirits so that they can be the best version of themselves.

It's a practice and a tool ✨

Our YTT starts Friday and we can't wait to welcome our new students to our sacred space after traveling for a few months. See you soon! 🩷

At our Shamana Yoga Teacher Trainings having hands-on experience is a crucial part of our curriculum.

Students have the opportunity to teach, guide, and practice with one another so they can put into action what they have learned!

This is such a key element for growth and for our students to not only grow their own practice and skills but to learn how to teach and guide. 🫶✨

Our next YTT is coming up soon, November 14- December 06, 2025 💕

Medicine in a Cup 🫶

In India, chai is considered a daily ritual that warms the body, awakens the senses, and unites people.Beneath its comforting taste lies an ancient Ayurvedic formula: a blend of herbs and spices that nourish, balance, and heal.

Each ingredient carries its own medicinal wisdom:🌶️ Ginger: ignites Agni (digestive fire) and clears stagnation.🍂 Cardamom: soothes the stomach and uplifts the spirit.🌰 Cinnamon: supports circulation and balances blood sugar.🌼 Clove: relieves congestion and warms the body.🌱 Black Pepper: enhances absorption of nutrients and detoxification.

✨ Traditional Chai Recipe (as prepared in India)
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup milk (or plant milk)
- 1 tsp grated ginger
- 3 crushed cardamom pods
- 1 small cinnamon stick
- 2 cloves
- A pinch of black pepper
- 1 tsp black tea leaves
* Optional: jaggery or honey to taste

In Ayurveda, chai is a medicine of the heart, grounding, revitalizing, and reminding us that healing can be found in simple daily rituals.

Twenty years ago, in a small village near the ancient ruins of Vijayanagara, the sacred city whose stones now rest in Hampi, Eran met a mystic Yogi healer, a humble radiant being- Swami Kupendra. Kupendra belonging to an ancient lineage, keepers of the spirit realm, protectors who transmute fear impurity, and death into Wisdom and Liberation

For weeks at dawn & sunrise hours among the ruins of Vijayanagara, Swami Kupendra performed with Eran sacred rituals: baths of purification , invoking the rivers as living goddesses, cleansing body and spirit with mantra chants, before entering meditation, commencing healing sessions and preforming initiations.

That meeting became a moment of profound awakening and deep healing , a turning point that set Eran’s spiritual journey into motion. Those mornings marked the beginning of a journey of transformation and rebirth.A time of healing, remembrance, and initiation.

Recently, two decades later, during the auspicious festival of Diwali, the festival of light, Eran returned to Hampi, for blessings, darshan and satsang with Kupendra. To sit once again in the presence of his beloved teacher and old friend- Guru Bhai.

He was warmly welcomed into the Swami’s family home, with his wife and children , where together they performed puja, shared meals, recalled life events and rejoiced in the grace of reunion.

In humble reverence and deep gratitude we pray to the Guru Tattva, the inner flame of wisdom that dispels darkness, protects through grace, and unites all beings in love.
May this radiance forever illuminate our path at Shamana Atitlan, and awaken remembrance in every seeking soul.

Learning Where Food is Medicine

Eran is currently in Pune, India, continuing his Ayurvedic studies with Dr. Mahesh, his longtime teacher whom he first met over 15 years ago. 🙏

This visit marks a return to deep learning and clinical practice immersing once again in the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda at its source. 🌱

While exploring the local markets, Eran is reminded that in India, the philosophy “Let food be thy medicine” is not a concept, it’s a way of life.

Here, food and medicine meet seamlessly, where every spice and plant holds the power to heal and restore balance.

✨ In the markets in India Eran has found that food and medicine mix so easily together where you can find foods that are healing. And in India it’s a truly a practice in everyday life and cooking!

Some healing foods found at the market in these photos🤲

🌿 Turmeric (Haridra) — anti-inflammatory, strengthens immunity, supports liver detoxification.
🍈 Amlaki (Indian Gooseberry) — rejuvenates the body, rich in vitamin C, enhances digestion and skin health.
🥒 Bitter Gourd (Karela) — purifies the blood, balances blood sugar, and cools internal heat.
🌶️ Cinnamon & other spices — ignite digestion (Agni), awaken the senses, and support circulation.

In Ayurveda, food is medicine, ritual, and connection.

Shamana center is located 10 min walk from Lake Atitlan. During the stay one can explore the lake with a paddle board and drift freely into the vast blue of the Lake.

Glide past volcano reflections, hear the soft whisper of the wind, and feel the heartbeat of the lake beneath you.

Whether at sunrise or in the golden calm of afternoon, this simple adventure becomes a meditation, an intimate way to meet the spirit of Atitlán.

Every moment on the board becomes a moving meditation. Freedom, beauty, and calm in perfect balance.

At Shamana, mornings often begin with movement, breath, and sunlight connecting body and mind before the day begins.

Surya Namaskar, or Sun Salutation, is a simple yet powerful way to awaken your energy and find balance.
It strengthens the body, calms the mind, and invites you to start each day with intention and gratitude. 🫶

Whether you’ve practiced yoga for years or you’re just beginning your journey this sequence is a reminder that every day is an opportunity to begin again.

✨ How do you start your mornings?

After a long time away, we finally had the possibility to visit our families, to hug our parents, sit around the table together, and reconnect with dear friends.

It was deeply nourishing to reunite, to share stories, laughter, cries and presence with our loved ones.

As Kapha-dominant constitutios, we cherish maintaining long-term, heart-centered relationships. We feel so blessed we were able to nourish our deep soul connections.

From here, our paths flow in different directions for a short while.
Eran travels to India for his Ayurveda internship,
and Batya & Pele to Portugal, to visit her sister and soul-sisters.

We’ll circle back soon, reuniting in Guatemala just before our next Yoga Teacher Training begins in mid-November, refreshed, inspired, and filled with gratitude.
