The Guatemalan government is doing an admirable job containing the COVID-19 virus and mitigating hotspots. Nevertheless, the long-term knock-on effects of prolonged lockdowns and other restrictions have led to an unfortunate economic situation leaving many families here in San Marcos extremely vulnerable. With an economy based mostly on tourism, hundreds of local families have been out of work since the borders closed in March. Without income coming in and no savings to fall back on, access to food, clean water, and basic supplies is becoming increasingly difficult for many.
The local NGOs and numerous volunteers in the community are doing whatever they can to help ease the crisis. It is wonderful to see, and we are happy to be a part of the combined efforts. We need to keep going, and more help is needed. Additional financial support is vital to continue providing relief-aid and assistance.
As long as the crisis remains in effect and until the local economy recovers, we want to do what we can to help improve the quality of life for our local neighbors. Please continue to give what you can, and share our fundraising campaign with your network. Your support might help save a life!
