Any youth interested in this awesome writing opportunity? Check it out!
This summer, War in the Pacific National Historical Park, along with their partner Pacific Historic Parks, is proud to host the first Monologue at the Museum: From Page to Stage writer’s workshop. This workshop is a great opportunity for youth to learn about Guam’s national park, research Guam’s pivotal role in World War II, discover the personal stories of loss and survival from the island community, and sharpen their creative writing skills.
Monologue at the Museum: From Page to Stage is a week-long writer’s workshop encouraging and educating the island youths, their families, and the community to engage with the stories of people during World War II on Guam. This cultural, historical, and student-centered project supports a distinct set of learning and skill-development objectives for youth in 9th – 12th grades, and provides a creative avenue to convey the experience of the T. Stell Newman Visitor Center’s vast collection of personal stories of survival, triumph, peace, and forgiveness in World War II.
The writer’s workshop is free and will run from July 30 to August 3, 2018. Writers will spend the week exploring World War II sites around Guam and researching a historic figure. Each morning, writers will take a field trip to gain important knowledge that will be applied during the afternoon writing, researching, and editing sessions. They will see real WWII artifacts, hear about the historic battles on Guam, spend time outdoors, research, and participate in monologue writing workshops with professional playwright, Diane Aoki. At the end of the week the writers will present their completed monologues highlighting an individual experience on Guam during WWII.
Youth in 9th - 12th grades are invited to apply. Application packets are available at the T. Stell Newman Visitor Center in Sumay or by request via email. The last day to submit a completed application with writing samples, either in person or via email, is Friday, July 13, 2018. Space is limited. Youth selected to join the workshop will be notified in late July.
