Cancer is a disease that affects people of all ages. However, with medical studies over the years, statistics show that around 30 - 50% of cancer cases are preventable. Here’s what you can do to help prevent cancer:

🏃‍♂Maintain a Healthy Weight & Active Lifestyle - Being overweight has been linked to cancers like colorectal, breast, endometrial, and kidney. In addition to staying active, diet is very important as well. Alcohol use is also linked to cancers of the oral cavity, colorectal, breast, etc.

💨Avoid Smoking & To***co Products - Avoiding smoking and other forms of to***co not only decreases your risk of cancer, but other diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, etc.

☀️Protect Your Skin from Sun Exposure - It's important to avoid excessive sun exposure. Make it a habit to use sunscreen on a daily basis and wear protective clothing such as long sleeves that are UPF classified and hats.

💉Get Your Immunizations - For those age 9 - 26 years of age, make sure to get the HPV Vaccine which reduces your risk of cervical, pe**le, vaginal, vulvar, oropharyngeal, and a**l cancers. The vaccine for hepatitis B also reduces your risk for liver cancer as well.

👩‍⚕️Keep Up with Annual Physicals & Get Screened - Early detection is key! By making this step a routine, it increases your chances of fighting any precancerous or cancerous detections at an early stage with success.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦Know Your Family Medical History - Knowing your family medical history is important information to give to your provider. If you are someone who meets the criteria for higher risk of a certain cancer due to your family history, your doctor may recommend you to get screened at an earlier time than the generalized age.

Gallbladder and bile duct cancers are rare, but they can have serious effects when diagnosed late. Because early symptoms may be subtle, awareness plays an important role in encouraging timely medical evaluation.

Understanding the signs — such as jaundice, persistent abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, or changes in urine and stool color — can help individuals seek care sooner.

While certain risk factors may increase the likelihood of developing these cancers, anyone experiencing ongoing symptoms should speak with a healthcare provider.

This month, we encourage our island community to stay informed, listen to your body, and share awareness with loved ones.
