"A new and superior type of mammography, used to detect cancer in breasts, is now available on Guam.
The announcement comes as awareness about finding breast cancer early is being raised locally and nationally during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Guam Radiology Consultants, located in Tamuning, was awarded a three-year accreditation in Breast Tomosynthesis by the American College of Radiology.
Digital breast tomosynthesis, also called 3D mammography, is clinically proven to significantly increase the detection rate of breast cancers by as much as 34%, according to GRC.
“Being the first to bring 3D mammography to Guam is great for our community. This is a great step for Guam’s medical community and for our fight against breast cancer,” said Dr. Nathaniel Berg, medical director of Guam Radiology Consultants.
He said the team at the Women’s Imaging Center worked hard to achieve the accreditation.
“Accreditation by the ACR means that the community can feel confident that we are using the best technology and techniques and that our team is highly qualified to provide them with the best diagnostic imaging results possible,” Berg said.
Breast cancer is one of the top five cancers on Guam and, according to the American Cancer Society, women in the United States have a 13% chance of developing the disease. Studies have shown rates of cancer to be even higher in the region.
According to GRC, the chance of surviving breast cancer is nearly 100% when found early."
