Diabetic neuropathy includes various types of nerve damage associated with diabetes mellitus. The most common form, diabetic peripheral neuropathy, affects 30% of all diabetic patients.

Symptoms of diabetes-related peripheral neuropathy

Diabetes-related peripheral neuropathy commonly affects your feet. Symptoms include:

* Numbness, tingling and/or pins and needles sensations (paresthesia).
* Pain, which may be burning, stabbing or shooting.
* Unusual touch-based sensations (dysesthesia).
* Muscle weakness.
* Slow-healing leg or foot sores (ulcers).
* Total loss of sensation in your feet, like not feeling pain from foot injuries.

Nerve damage that causes peripheral neuropathy typically develops over many years. You may not notice symptoms of mild nerve damage for a long time.

A new study has revealed that a parasite commonly found in cats, Toxoplasma gondii, may influence the human brain far more than scientists once thought. This microscopic invader causes toxoplasmosis and can quietly settle inside brain cells, often for years, without showing symptoms. But researchers found that even a few infected neurons can change how the brain communicates and processes signals.

Experiments on mouse brain cells showed that infected neurons release fewer extracellular vesicles tiny chemical messengers that help neurons talk to astrocytes, the brain’s support cells. Without these vesicles, astrocytes struggle to clean up excess glutamate, a brain chemical that, in high levels, can become toxic and cause seizures or nerve damage. This disruption could explain why long-term toxoplasmosis is being linked to subtle changes in brain function and behavior.

While most healthy people never notice an infection, the parasite’s global spread makes these findings important. Up to 80% of people in some regions may carry T. gondii unknowingly. Experts recommend simple precautions washing hands after handling cat litter and cooking meat thoroughly to stay safe. The discovery adds a new layer to how parasites may silently shape our brains and behavior.

World Su***de Prevention day
Every life matters!!

“Changing the narrative on su***de”

Each year, an estimated 720,000 people die by su***de worldwide — with devastating and far-reaching impacts on families, friends, workplaces, and communities, highlighting the urgent need for prevention, support, and systemic change.
On 10 September 2025, people and organisations across the world will unite to mark World Su***de Prevention Day (WSPD) under the triennial theme “Changing the Narrative on Su***de”. This year, particular focus is being placed on accessibility, with resources translated into more languages to ensure the campaign can reach and engage communities around the world.

Changing the narrative on su***de is about transforming silence, stigma, and misunderstanding into openness, empathy, and support. It is about encouraging individuals, communities, organisations, and governments to act with the following key messages:
* Awareness & Understanding: Talk openly and compassionately about su***de, challenging myths and breaking down stigma.
* Policy: Advocate for the decriminalisation of su***de and the development of national su***de prevention strategies.
* Action: Take part in training, share stories, and check in with loved ones.
* Conflict Areas: Ensure those affected by crisis and instability have access to mental health care and protective support.
World Su***de Prevention Day was established in 2003 by the International Association for Su***de Prevention (IASP) in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO). It provides a powerful opportunity every year to raise awareness, foster understanding, and inspire action.
Everyone has a role to play. From individuals checking in with loved ones, to communities creating safe spaces, to governments enacting policies and allocating resources — together, we can change the narrative and work towards a world where su***de is prevented, and every life is valued.
