Today, on World Su***de Prevention Day, we join the global call to action under the theme "Changing the Narrative".
In Guyana, su***de has touched too many families and communities. Together we can change this story. We can move away from silence, stigma and shame — and move towards compassion, support and hope.
Changing the narrative means saying "died by su***de", not "committed su***de", because this is not a crime, but rather a tragedy of pain. It means listening without judgement, reaching out when someone is struggling and letting our friends, family and loved ones know that they are not alone.
Su***de is preventable and each of us has a role to play. A small conversation, a check-in call, or simply reminding someone that they matter, can save a life.
Today, let us commit to building a Guyana where mental health is spoken about openly, where support is accessible, and where every person feels valued and understood.
Together, we can change the narrative — from despair to hope, from isolation to community, from loss to life.
If you or someone you know is struggling, please call the National Su***de Prevention helpline: 915 | The Ministry of Health's Mental Health Unit: 225-0804 | Or visit: www.mentalhealth.gov.gy
