A Calling, Not Just a Career: Nurse Gabrielle Spencer

For Nurse Gabrielle Spencer, nursing is much more than a career; it's a calling rooted in empathy, faith, and lived experience. With nearly a decade as a registered nurse, Gabrielle’s journey into healthcare was shaped long before she ever donned a uniform. In 2012, she was once a patient herself after an accident that left her with a broken ankle and required two surgeries. During that hospital stay, the compassion and care she received from nurses left a lasting impression. It was then that she knew she wanted to be on the other side of care, offering comfort, reassurance, and healing to others.

As she nears ten years in the profession, Gabrielle describes her experience as profoundly fulfilling. While she admits there are moments when the demands of nursing cause her to pause and reflect, she is clear about the difference between a job and a calling. As a Christian, she believes her purpose is to help people, and nursing enables her to live that purpose every day. Because of this, the long hours and high-pressure environment do not drain her; instead, they reinforce why she chose this path.

Now serving at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, Gabrielle brings not only skill but also compassion to the emergency department. Having recently returned to Guyana after spending time abroad, she views her role with fresh appreciation. Even during demanding periods, such as the Christmas season, when many would prefer to be at home, she willingly works. For her, being present on Christmas Day is an opportunity to support patients with nowhere else to turn and to give colleagues with children the chance to be with their families.

Gabrielle’s approach to care is rooted in a simple yet powerful principle: kindness. Working in an environment where emotions often run high, she has observed how quickly situations can escalate when frustration replaces empathy. Her message to patients and the wider public is clear: everyone bears something unseen. A calm word, a respectful tone, or a simple question like “Are you okay?” can make all the difference.

Through her quiet dedication, Nurse Gabrielle Spencer reminds us that healthcare is not only about treatment and procedures but also about human connection. In every shift she works, she continues to honour the compassion once shown to her, paying it forward, one patient at a time.

It is okay to disappoint people. In fact, it’s often necessary. When you choose to stay true to your values and beliefs you will inevitably let others down at times, but that’s not a reflection of your worth. It’s a sign of self respect. You are not responsible for managing everyone else’s expectations at the cost of your own well being. People who genuinely care about you will understand and those who don’t were only invested in what you could offer them, not in who you truly are. Disappointment is temporary, but betraying yourself to please others creates long term resentment. Honor your path, even if it means not meeting everyone’s expectations.
