STATEMENT

The National Commission on Disability (NCD), as the national focal point for disability issues in Guyana, affirms the vital role played by St. Barnabus Special Needs School and other special needs and inclusive educational institutions across the country. These schools provide structured, professional, and compassionate environments where children with diverse learning needs are nurtured, educated, and empowered to reach their full potential. Attendance at a special school is not a reflection of a child’s worth, intelligence, or value to society.

The use of derogatory language perpetuates harmful stereotypes, encourages discrimination, and undermines both national and international commitments to the rights of Persons with Disabilities, including the fundamental principles of dignity, respect, and inclusion. Children with learning disabilities deserve understanding, acceptance, and equal opportunities—not mockery or exclusion.

The National Commission on Disability reminds the public that discrimination against Persons with Disabilities, including children, is unacceptable. We call on all citizens, particularly those with public platforms, to use their influence responsibly and to promote messages that foster respect, empathy, and social inclusion.

The NCD remains committed to advocating for the rights of Persons with Disabilities and to working collaboratively with stakeholders to build a society where all children—regardless of ability—are valued, respected, and protected.

Together, let us promote understanding, respect special education, and stand firmly against discrimination in all its forms.
