Advice to a pregnant, soon-to-be mum.
1. Don’t be talked into a C Section, other than in an emergency situation. The normal vaginal birth is essential to give the baby a healthy start. The fluids in the vaginal canal pass essential immunity and other related ingredients through the baby’s skin. It is best to wait for a few minutes before cleaning the baby, other than clearing the mouth and nose, to allow the skin to absorb this important fluid.
2. During delivery there should be no pressure on the sacrum, to allow the important extension during delivery. This is one reason to go for a water birth. An inflexible sacrum, wedged onto a firm surface during delivery can result in a more difficult labour and can also result in a displaced or fractured coccyx (tailbone) in the mother.
3. Persuade your doctor to avoid pulling the head during delivery. The baby’s neck is easily compromised with potential neurological damage. Once one shoulder is visible, traction can be used there to ease the baby out.
4. The sooner the baby is placed, skin to skin with the mother, the greater the bonding.
5. Do not be talked into bottle feeding. Breast feeding is so important during the early years of a baby’s life. No formula can substitute mother’s milk. The action of suckling from the breast helps to develop the structure of the oral cavity (Stomatognathic system), jaws and teeth. Bottle feeding requires no sucking as the fluid flows easily.
6. Don’t let them bully you into Vaccinations at birth. If you have the vaccinate to get the child into school, then wait until then to vaccinate. Studies prove that unvaccinated children are healthier than vaccinated children.
