Working on the “R” sound

In this session, we read a story about a lion who needed a haircut. We worked on our roaring “R” sounds while cutting the mane of our own lion!

Did you know there are two ways to create an “R” sound? One method is the “bunched R” where the tongue is spread and the sides of the tongue elevated. The other method is the “retroflex R” where the tongue is elevated and pulled back.

For this client, we are working on the retroflex R as he comes from a multilingual family and their home language includes retroflex sounds. So we started with a L sound (for Lion!) and drew the tongue back in the mouth to create the “R”. Individualised therapy is important!

What’s the meaning behind the phrase “Teach Don’t Test”?

This is a phrase I use a lot when working with the families of young children who may be showing delays in their language development.

This could include:
- Late Talkers (less than 50 words by age 2)
- AAC users (eg. Those using an iPad or sign language to communicate)
- Kids growing up in multilingual environments (to boost their exposure to words in multiple languages)
- Neurodiverse kids (though please note, this technique may need to be modified for kids who present as gestalt language processors)

While asking questions can often be our default as adults, a lot of the time this backfires with kids! A better way to build language and boost interaction is to model language. We want repetition, repetition, repetition of key and relevant vocabulary, in order to support language development.

So next time you sit down to play with your little one, take a moment to reflect on if *you* could take a step back, get involved in play, and become a teacher, not a tester. 🙌🏼

Long Summer Days = Time to Love Reading!

ISLP Summer Literacy group is tailored to the interests and levels of the participants. The small group size facilitates individualised support, and we explore a different theme each week!

Previous themes include: Pirates, Olympics, Transport, Superheroes, Nature, Detectives, and Space.

We have created fairytale/superhero crossovers, designed our own coolest-in-the-world new type of transport, and even worked as a group to write a mystery story.

As well as building literacy skills, we develop vocabulary, presentation skills, reading confidence and comprehension, and teamwork.

🍫🍪🧑🏽‍🍳

“CH” is a tricky sound for a lot of kids, as it’s one of a class of sounds called “affricates”, which are made by closely combining two speech sounds - in this case “T” and “SH”.

The other affricate we use in English is “J” which is the voiced equivalent of “CH” and is made up of the “D” and “ZH” sounds.

We targeted this tricky sound in a fun and playful way by reading a book about how chocolate is made, then making our own chocolate shop, complete with white chocolate and strawberry chocolate chip biscuits, and a mint chocolate surprise.

At Imagine Speech-Language Pathology, we are all about play. So how and why do you incorporate play into speech therapy?

A wordy post, yes, but we want to start sharing more about the 'how's and why's' of what we do here.

Fun and Fantastic Feeding!

Most people don’t realise that feeding intervention falls under the scope of a speech-language pathologist. One of the most common questions asked is “but what actually is feeding therapy?”.

Stay tuned for a post to answer this very question!

In the meantime, enjoy this picture taken in a recent intervention session, where we explored several different non-preferred foods in a safe, fun, and supportive way.

Wow - what a whirlwind this past year was!

2023 for me was a year of focusing on my personal goals and growth. It included incredible opportunities for travel, prioritising spending time with loved ones, experiencing my first snow season, trail running through four continents, and, most special of all, getting married to my best friend.

And, as I prioritised personal growth last year, this year I prepare to prioritise professional growth. What does this mean for Imagine Speech-Language Pathology?

* Diverse caseload - 2024 has started right, and I’m privileged to be diving into a mix of old and new faces in my clinic room, providing support for speech, language, feeding, literacy, and public speaking.
* New location - I am currently on the hunt for a long-term office space, where I can support my clients in a beautiful and functional space.
* Increased online availability - primarily for teens and adults, these services can cover public speaking, voice therapy (both traditional and gender affirming), accent and intelligibility coaching, and fluency (stuttering) therapy. I am licensed to provide services for both an Australian and Hong Kong based population.
* Business growth - I am on the lookout for a likeminded speechie to join the team here at Imagine SLP. Different face, same values!
* More collaboration - with families, businesses, schools, and other healthcare providers
* Continued fun as a professional voiceover artist, singing and recording content for toy, business, and education companies
* Another book - yes, for all of you who have followed along with Boo, 2024 will see the unveiling of a new adventure, designed to track speech development from ages 4-7, covering the whole timeline of speech sound development!

If you have been thinking about reaching out, this is the time to do it. I’m so excited for all the opportunities 2024 is bringing my way and am so proud to continue to support my clients in a holistic and person centred way.

Everyone, meet Kylie!

I am so excited to announce that Kylie has taken on the role of distributor for “Easy for You to Say” in South Africa! Kylie is so excited to come on board as part of the team, and shared why she is personally so enthusiastic about “Easy for You to Say”, and getting it out into homes, schools, and little hands all around the Rainbow Nation:

“As a mom of a 2 year old who is trying to instill the love of reading in her son, this book is not only an amazing story but provides me with wonderful guidelines to understand the milestones he needs to work towards in terms of his speech development.”

If you are based in South Africa and would like to get your hands on a copy of “Easy for You to Say”, you can reach out to Kylie via whatsapp (+27793347350)or email (kylie@bestbrainsolutions.co.za)
