We’re proud to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Materia Nova, marking the start of an ambitious collaborative research partnership focused on micro- and nanoplastics—one of today’s most pressing environmental challenges 🌍.

MateriaNova is a leading R&D center based in Belgium, backed by the University of Mons (UMONS). It specializes in circular, safe and durable materials, decarbonization solutions, and defossilization technologies. Supported by 100+ scientists, a strong network of industry experts and pilot‑scale facilities, Materia Nova bridges cutting‑edge research and industrial application, driving innovation in building a circular economy.

By bringing together Materia Nova’s research expertise and OKOsix’s innovation in bio-based and fully compostable materials, we aim to accelerate solutions with real-world impact.

We’re deeply honored to welcome Albert Wong, former CEO of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP), as an advisor to ÖKOSIX.

Albert is a visionary leader in building innovation and technology ecosystems. During his transformative tenure at HKSTP, he helped evolve what began as a real estate driven initiative into a thriving innovation hub supporting over 25,000 people and thousands of startups across deep tech, AI, healthtech, and advanced manufacturing.

As we step into 2026, we’re incredibly excited to welcome Prof. Dean Toste, a world-renowned synthetic organic chemist, as Scientific Advisor to ÖKOSIX, further strengthening our scientific leadership in sustainable materials innovation.

🏆 Prof. Toste is Chair of the Dept. of Chemistry at UC Berkeley, The Gerald E. K. Branch Distinguished Professor of Chemistry, and a faculty scientist at the chemical sciences division of Lawrence Berkeley National Lab. He is the recipient of numerous prestigious awards for his pioneering work in chemical synthesis and catalytic innovation.

How long do soft non-woven fabrics take to decompose?

😷 In healthcare, personal protective equipment (PPE) like surgical masks or gowns are essential — we can’t avoid them.

However all these are made of layers of plastic, primarily polypropylene (PP), and can take over 400 years to biodegrade.

🗑️ Every day, billions of masks alone are discarded globally. This is a plastic problem we urgently need to solve at its root.

And plastic doesn’t truly vanish. It breaks into microplastics that infiltrate soil, entering oceans, food chains, and even human bodies.

☘️ That’s why we developed — our next-generation, 100% plant-based material for producing medical-grade face masks and gowns. It is certified to decompose in 6 months after disposal in landfill environment, thus can be disposed of as ordinary waste. It is also ready for drop-in replacement, helping healthcare cut its plastic and carbon footprint without changing existing production lines.

Last month, we were shortlisted for the Top 200 at . Eddie, our Founder, took the stage to introduce , our medical-grade, 100% biodegradable plastic that runs on existing production lines (and costs less than PLA!).

Through TechCrunch, we connected with investors and potential clients who showed great interest in our innovation.

Our mission is simple: *real impact, not hype*.

Healthcare alone throws away millions of tons of plastic every year, and we want to change that, starting with medical face masks and surgical gowns, and later diapers and other single-use items.
