*Medical Volunteer Support at Tai Po Shelters: A Reflection*
From November 26 to December 6, 2025, I had the privilege of serving as one of the coordinators for medical support at the shelters for residents affected by the recent fire in Tai Po. Our base of operations was the Tai Po Community Centre (大埔社區中心), where we provided crucial medical services to those in dire need following this devastating incident.
Over the course of our mission, our dedicated volunteer team (Doctors, Chinese Medicine Practitioners, Nurses, Pharmacists, First Aiders, Clinical Psychologists) conducted more than 400 consultations, offering a blend of both Western and Chinese medicine, and psychological counselling. It has been a privilege to address the diverse medical needs of the affected residents, ensuring they receive the comprehensive care necessary during such a difficult time. Each consultation was not just a medical interaction; it was a moment of connection, understanding, and support for individuals who were dealing with significant loss.
One of the standout aspects of this experience was the collaborative effort among various teams, including the District Healthcare Centre staff, Pharmacy+, the Hong Kong Red Cross, Clinical Psychologists, and our medical volunteer teams. Witnessing the synergy between these groups has been nothing short of inspiring. We truly operated as a family, unified by our commitment to support the community. This spirit of cooperation significantly enhanced the quality of care we were able to provide, proving that our collective efforts can lead to impactful outcomes.
As I reflect on this mission, my heartfelt gratitude goes to the leadership of the Primary Healthcare Commission, and all Colleagues who demonstrated relentless dedication. Our medical support at the Tai Po Community Centre, along with the overnight nursing care provided for eight additional shelters, has undoubtedly made a significant difference in the lives of those affected. Each member of our team contributed their skills and compassion, reinforcing the idea that healthcare extends beyond mere treatment; it encompasses empathy and solidarity.
The conclusion of our medical volunteer support on December 6, 2025, marks the end of this mission. It has been an honour to lend our hands to those impacted by the fire, and the bonds we have formed during this endeavor will remain with us long after our services have ended.
Though we mourn the losses sustained, the medical community has exemplified remarkable unity, resilience, and strength throughout this crisis. As we complete this mission for now, I encourage everyone to carry our commitment to serve with love and purposeful action into the future.
Together, we can continue to make a difference, no matter what the challenges that lie ahead.
In solidarity,
Dr. Charas Ong
