TO USE OR NOT TO USE PROBIOTICS IN PEDIATRIC PRIMARY CARE

With the growing recognition of the role of the gut microbiota in early life and its impact on health and subsequent diseases, a number of interventions targeting the gut microbiota, including probiotics, are increasingly being used. In pediatrics, evidence suggests that select probiotics have the potential to prevent diseases (e.g., necrotizing enterocolitis, antibiotic-associated diarrhea, nosocomial diarrhea, respiratory tract infections, eczema, and infantile colic), as well as to treat diseases (e.g., acute gastroenteritis). However, most recently, some high-impact publications have questioned the efficacy of probiotics, at least for some indications. During this presentation, factors contributing to the dysbiosis early in life, as well as current evidence and controversies on the use of probiotics in the pediatric population will be discussed. Additionally, safety aspects of probiotics and recommendations on how to choose a probiotic will be presented.
