Today the hospital was attacked.
Throughout its existence HBM has served the local population of Port au Prince without prejudice. Many people owe their lives to the doctors and nurses who treated them with compassion and expertise regardless of their background. Rich or poor, everyone has been given access to life saving interventions over the years.
Through Earthquake, Riots, Hurricanes, Covid and times of Peace the Brothers Bitar and their medical and administrative teams have treated people in extraordinary and extreme circumstances with care and compassion and used their expertise to save lives.
We are shocked and saddened by these recent events.

We are devestated by the news that one of our EMTs that went on to be a police officer was shot and killed today. He loved his community and country, and passed away protecting it. Jeff will be missed by the HBM staff. We will help support his family including his young baby. RIP our friend and family member.

Little Adrien Island was playing when she was struck in the head by a rock during the earthquake on August 14th. The rock caused a minor injury to her head; an injury that if there had been a clinic nearby, could have been quickly taken care of. Unfortunately, during one of the many aftershocks that shook Southern Haiti, she was hit again in the head by more debris causing a bigger injury. Adrien and her family are from a very remote area of Haiti and the closest clinic is hours away in the best of times. After the earthquake, roads made impassible by rock slides made this journey nearly impossible.
As Adrien waited for help, her family tended the injury the best they could, but the infection grew and grew. Luckily, a team of Haitian doctors and their students from EduCare Haiti found her. They treated her and others that were injured in the area and refused to leave her side until more help could arrive. That help came in the form of the USCG with staff from HERO that needed to perform a hoist manuvere to get little Adrien and her care giver into the helicopter and on the way to PAP for advanced care at HBM.
Neurosurgeon, Dr Lafortune, was able to operate to clear infected tissue and close the injury. He is hopeful for a full recovery for Adrien.

Two year old Rose Doilyn's mother was at work at a local hotel in Les Cayes when the earthquake struck on August 14th. She rushed home to check on her family only to find Rose pinned under the rubble of her house. Blocks had fallen on little Rose and another 12 year old child. Rescue efforts began immediately, and as soon as the children were cleared of the debris they were rushed to OFATMA hospital for care.
Rose had suffered a devistating crush injury to her right arm. She was stabalized at OFATMA and then sent by helicopter to PAP and arrived at Hospital Bernard Mevs by ambulance.
Although every effort was made to save her arm, ultimately Rose needed to have high amputation near her shoulder. Her mother is very grateful that her sweet baby is doing so well and quickly adapting to the loss of her arm. She also reports that the other child that was injured was treated at a different hospital in PAP, discharged and doing well. Everyone at HBM has fallen in love with Rose for her spirit and bravery and wish the best for her and family.

29 year old Micherlan was in her house near Les Cayes when the earthquake struck. She fell to the floor and debris from her house rained down around her striking her in the head. Because of her injuries, she needed to be flown to Port Au Prince to receive treatment she could not have in the south including a head CT. There was one problem, Micherlan and her family live on a mountain. She was cut off by impassible roads and could not reach a hospital. To make matters worse, the helicopters could not land where she was. The USCG needed to deploy a basket to the ground and hoist her through the air in order to get her into the helicopter. She was triaged at the airport in PAP and then transfered to Hospital Bernard Mevs where she has been receiving care for a head and pelvis fracture. She will stay in PAP with her brother to recover and receive follow up care before traveling back to the rest of her family.
