If you have lower back pain, tight hips can be the cause.

Tight hips can result in lower back pain, knee pain, and altered movement patterns.

Choosing the right massage for low back pain.

Massage therapy can provide significant healing and pain relief for many lower back issues. Specifically, when the correct muscle is targeted, pain caused by a back strain can be controlled at its source, resulting in quicker and more lasting relief.

Two major muscles, the quadratus lumborum and the gluteus medius, play a crucial role in stabilizing and supporting the lower back and hips. When there is a change in the biomechanics of these muscles due to strain or fatigue, various problems can occur, including lower back pain, stiffness, and decreased mobility.

Horse riding, I have found out, can be a dangerous sport! Being thrown from a horse can lead to serious fractures, bruising, back and neck pain, shoulder injuries, as well as soft tissue damage to tendons, ligaments and muscles.

The joints in the hips, ankles and knees can take a serious battering, due to the continued and repetitive vibration with pressure placed on them. The tendons that connect the bones to surrounding muscles can also suffer in much the same way. Over time, this can lead to a repetitive strain injury. One of the most common injuries suffered by equestrians are pulled or strained muscles. The equestrian lower back and adductors suffer the most.

Több évig a Máltai Táncakadémia (YADA) masszázsterapeutája voltam.

Myofascial and Periosteal Deep Tissue Massage

The technology of myofascial relaxation (myofascial relizing technique) was developed in the U.S. by a group of specialists from Michigan College of osteopathic, and in subsequent years, was brought to the perfection. It’s a massage technique that uses friction and sustained pressure to release fascia. Fascia is a connective tissue that envelopes or binds internal body structures to support, separate and protect them. Normal fascia is relaxed and stretches and moves easily. Injury, tight muscles, hunched shoulders and slouching contribute to tightening fascia. Effects are cumulative, so repetitive motions or bad posture stiffen fascia more and more over time. The therapy seeks to release the fascia, returning it to a relaxed state.

The Quadratus Lumborum (QL) muscles are located on both sides of your spine between your ribcage and pelvis. These muscles help with the movement of your lower back, but also help to support your spine. QL pain can be described as a dull, aching pain which can become sharp at times from specific movements. Sometimes considered “the joker” of lower back pain, it is often overlooked as the main cause of the pain, with other lower back structures taking the blame.

What aggravates QL?

Poor posture when standing or sitting can place added stress on the quadratus lumborum and lead to pain. Slouching, leaning to one side, or sitting without back support can cause the muscle to become sore and tight.

When the glutes are tight from disuse, the QL will compensate by becoming the prime mover of the hip joint. This results in a gait that hikes the hip upward with each step. Hiking the hip upward in this fashion will lead to compression of the lumbar region due to excessive side bending.

How can QL Pain be treated and prevented.

It is important to get your back pain assessed as soon as possible to determine the underlying issue of pain. To treat QL pain there are a few things that can be done.

🔥 Heat: Put heat on the area for 10-15 minutes. This will help improve the flexibility in the muscle and give you some short-term pain relief.

🙆‍♂️ Stretches: Stretches can help target the QL muscle and give you short term pain relief. A physiotherapist can advise you on the correct stretches to do for QL pain.

👣 Keep moving: Movement is important to prevent QL pain from developing or getting worse. If working at a desk, take regular breaks from sitting every 20-30 minutes. Go for a walk or make a cup of tea; anything to get your lower back moving!

💆‍♂️ Massage: Massage of the QL muscle can provide great results when QL pain is overwhelming. Make sure you attend a chartered physiotherapist if you have QL pain, as they are trained appropriately and can target the area specifically.

💪 Strengthening exercises: Finally completing strengthening work is essential to prevent recurrence of QL pain. A chartered physiotherapist can provide you with the most appropriate exercises to strengthen your core, lower back and bum. This will help prevent future QL pain

Treating Water Retention With Massage Therapy

Do you suffer from water retention? Our bodies contain a network of vessels that are designed to drain fluid from nearby tissue, flushing it back into the bloodstream. Known as the lymphatic system, it plays a key role in the our bodies ability to regulate internal fluid levels.

But it’s not uncommon for the lymphatic system to become overwhelmed or experience other issues that inhibit its ability to perform this task.

The good news is that most cases of water retention are minor and pose no serious risk to a person’s health. With that said, it can still trigger some pretty unpleasant symptoms. Some of the most commonly reported symptoms of fluid retention include the following:

- Swollen feet and/or ankles
- Body aches
- Stiff joints
- Sudden fluctuations in weight
- Pressing against the skin may cause it to “indent” for a short period of time.

There’s a simple way to promote a healthy lymphatic system while treating the effects of water retention: massage therapy. A professional massage therapist can manipulate both your tissue and lymphatic vessels, encouraging excess fluid to drain. It’s a safe and effective way to treat water retention without medication.

If you’ve ever had a professional massage before, you may recall the feeling of needing to urinate afterwards. This feeling is attributed to its effect on the lymphatic system. Massage therapy helps mobilize fluid through the lymphatic system so it can drain more easily. As a result, many people feel the sudden urge to urinate after having a massage. This is completely normal and even beneficial, as it flushes toxins and waste from your body.

In addition to massage therapy, there are few other solutions to help water retention. For starters, you should limit your consumption of salty, sodium-rich foods. The average person consumes roughly 3,400 mg of sodium per day, which is more than twice the daily amount recommended. Sodium is a key nutrient that our bodies require to stay healthy, but consuming an excessive amount may cause your body to retain water.

Staying active may also discourage your body from retaining water. Strive for a minimum of 30 minutes of medium-intensity aerobic exercise per day. This combined with a low-sodium diet and massage therapy will allow your body to flush fluids more easily.
