What is Pulse Wave Velocity Normal Range?

awareness of the normal range for PWV could assist physicians in initiating early interventions for lowering levels of arterial stiffness. PWV values depend on both the method used and the device.

In 2007, the ESH/ESC hypertension guidelines established a threshold of 12 m/s for carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity. However, this threshold was subsequently revised to 10 m/s in 2013.

What Is Pulse Wave Velocity?

Pulse wave velocity (PWV), recognized as the primary parameter for assessing arterial stiffness, serves as a potential indicator for early detection of atherosclerosis. What is pulse wave velocity? It’s the speed at which the pressure wave, initiated by ventricular contraction, travels through the arteries.

Arteriograph has transformed the arterial stiffness measurement significantly!

A blood pressure measurement is typically used for identifying the potential risk of cardiovascular diseases. Traditionally, obtaining an accurate blood pressure reading is crucial to determining the risk of heart disease and stroke. However, recent studies have demonstrated that besides blood pressure values, there are other parameters from the Arterial Stiffness Family that should also be considered to obtain a better understanding of a patient's condition. These parameters include
1-Pulse Wave Velocity,
2-Central Systolic Blood Pressure, and
3- Augmentation Index.
The Arteriograph is an oscillometric device that was invented based on this idea and is capable of measuring 15 hemodynamic parameters. It has become the successor to the regular blood pressure monitor and has saved numerous lives by providing preventative measures.

The successor of normal blood pressure measurement devices!

Arterial stiffness has been established as an effective predictor of cardiovascular events and mortality, independently of traditional risk factors. Knowledge of the values related to the arterial stiffness parameters provides a possibility for early diagnosis of the above phenomena, enabling a proper course of action in treating patients even in the asymptomatic stage of their cardiovascular disease. A gradual increase can be observed in the significance of the non-invasive methods for arterial stiffness assessment, such as pulse wave velocity (PWV) measurement, regarding the screening of the patients. The PWV parameter represents the propagation velocity of pressure waves which can be analysed nearly anywhere in the vascular system. However, the aortic pulse wave velocity (PWVao) is considered to possess the highest clinical relevance.

The Arteriograph device providing – among others – the value of the PWVao parameter, functions with an improved efficiency in comparison with common blood pressure measurement devices in predicting several cardiovascular diseases. The device is a substantial replacement of the normal NIBP devices due to its technical edge above them.

The worsening condition of arteries is generally detected only when their stiffening process has already reached a significant level. It is essential, however, for the prevention or effective treatment of cardiovascular diseases to recognise their early, asymptomatic signs and act accordingly.

Arteriograph offers ¬– among many other parameters ¬– the aortic pulse wave velocity (PWVao) as a solution to the above problem. The measured pulse wave propagation speed is proportional to the rigidity of the aortic wall, thus allowing the detection of forming plaques. The results of the measurements with Arteriograph are useful data for the doctor assessing them to suggest appropriate prevention steps or treatment for a patient even before a developed stage of their cardiovascular disease. Thus, major cardiovascular events and the death of patients related to these problems can be avoided.

Arteriograph was designed with regard to the relevant medical guidelines (e.g., ESH), and continues to support the latest medical and technical requirements.

Arteriograph improves arterial stiffness assessments!

Discover this innovative method by TensioMed:

Cardiovascular diseases create a significant burden on the health care system worldwide. The major cause of the cardiovascular diseases is atherosclerosis and vascular calcification.
During these processes the arteries are stiffened and loses their elasticity.

PWA (Pulse Wave Analysis) and PWVao (Aortic Pulse Wave Velocity) measurements are fundamental tests to reveal arterial stiffening due to asymptomatic atherosclerosis and vascular calcification. The arterial stiffness parameters have proven prognostic value regarding cardiovascular events (stroke, myocardial infarction), and this relationship is independent from the traditional risk factors (age, smoking habit, systolic blood pressure, gender, and cholesterol).

Arteriograph is the first, original, patented non-invasive method and device, which measures aortic pulse wave velocity (PWVao), aortic augmentation (AIXao) and central (aortic) blood pressure (SBPao) with a single upper arm cuff.

TensioDay Plus and its the main advantages
TensioDay Plus is a non-invasive, portable 24h monitoring device, providing brachial and central (aortic) systolic blood pressure values throughout the day.
The central BP is more informative than the brachial BP in the management of hypertension, because the applied drugs are acting differently on the peripheral and central BP.

Arterial Stiffness as a Predictor of Cardiovascular Events

Arterial Rigidity & Its Related Risk Factors

Our attention brings toward a validate method and technology to quantify the vascular stiffness due to its important ant role in increasing pulse pressure and accelerating atherosclerosis that preceding the MI and stroke risk as well as progressing the onset of overt end-organ disease. Aging, metabolic disease, obesity, vitamin D deficiency and hyperparathyroidism, sleep disturbances, smoking are several conditions link to arterial stiffness.

It may be important to therapeutically address the intrinsic biomechanical properties of the arterial wall and its measurement to achieve a more effective impact of arterial stiffness beyond blood pressure control and preventing further pathological comorbidities and outcomes.

Detection of Arterial Stiffness
Determinates of Arterial Stiffens & PWV Progression
Arterial aging is an unconventional indicator of cardiovascular risk by increasing the elastic arteries stiffness. The PWV progression and increase in arterial stiffness over a period, in treated hypertensive individuals are identified by three factors: “uncontrolled blood pressure values, increased HR, and increased serum creatinine.” Arteriograph with eligibility of early detecting and accurate measuring of PWV in daily clinical routine for high risk individuals can play a major role in lowering the speed of progression and further unsatisfactory outcomes.

Aging, imbalance in collagen degradation and elastin production can result in arterial stiffness. Relatively low velocity pressure wave made, when forward propagated wave interface with the intrinsic impedance of the aorta. The return timing of the reflected wave from the peripheral site which is affected by the pulsatile component of arterial afterload can be a significant factor of arterial stiffness. The concept of Arteriograph as an advanced technique is measuring the PWV especially in asymptomatic individuals comparing to the hardships of invasive methods in a daily clinical routine can play an indispensable role.
