*** EHIC/European Health Insurance Card ***

What is the European Health Insurance Card?

A free card that gives you access to medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in any of the 27 EU countries, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland or the United Kingdom under the same conditions and at the same cost (free in some countries) as people insured in that country. The benefits covered include, for example, benefits provided in conjunction with chronic or existing illnesses and in conjunction with pregnancy and childbirth.

Cards are issued by your national health insurance provider.

Important – the European Health Insurance Card:

1. Is not an alternative to travel insurance. It does not cover any private healthcare or costs such as a return flight to your home country or lost/stolen property,
2. Does not cover your costs if you are travelling for the express purpose of obtaining medical treatment,

3. Does not guarantee free services. Each country’s healthcare system is different services that cost nothing at home might not be free in another country.
Please note: when you move your habitual residence to another country, you should register with the S1 form instead of using the EHIC to receive medical care in your new country of habitual residence.

The European Health Insurance Card makes it easier for people from the European Union’s 28 Member States plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland to access health care services during temporary visits abroad.

*** How to repatriate your pension back to your home country from Hungary ***

Note: I am going to talk in the context of India here which has a bilateral social agreement with Hungary.

- The Hungarian authorities neither refund any social/pension contributions or taxes for insured persons nor transfer them to other countries.

- Once the person becomes eligible for a Hungarian old age pension then according to the current law if the following 2 conditions are fulfilled you will get your pension (Hungary will pay the old age pension for you):

1. You reach the age of 65 years and have at least 15 years of insured periods in the EU or in other countries
2. Hungary has a social agreement (India is one of them) with your country.

Note: Earlier payment is not possible as per Hungarian law.
