🌿 Life beneath — and above — the surface of Lake Hévíz 🐦
Hévízi-tó is known as the world’s largest biologically active thermal lake. Its uniqueness lies not only in the beneficial microorganisms in the water but also in its rich flora and fauna. Alongside snails, fish, frogs and turtles, many bird species also call the lake home.
One of the most charming residents is the Little Grebe 🐦
Returning guests often greet the Little Grebe families living around the lake baths like old friends. Catching a glimpse of nesting birds or newly hatched chicks is a truly special experience.
What should you know about the Little Grebe?
▪ the most common grebe species in Hungary, protected
▪ feeds on aquatic insects but also eats plant matter
▪ a migratory bird, yet often stays at Lake Hévíz through autumn and winter
▪ females lay 4–6 eggs between April and July, with both parents guarding them
When visiting the lake baths, keep an eye on the water’s surface — you might spot a Little Grebe family swimming nearby. 📸
