Capsicum frutescens
English : chilli ; pepper
Indonesian : cabai
In some country these lil beauties from Nighshade family(Solanaceae) called Bird Eye Chilli. They’re tiny in size but can really sting your tongue and lips. It’s a race between human and animals to grow these tiny fruits(yes, it is fruit) in an open space in the farm since the birds and the chickens love to eat them. So, when you seeing red go pick them before it’s gone, I promise they’re so tasty when you grow them naturally with no chemical stuff just like the last photo. The green unripe one also great for sambal(Typical Indonesian chilli) or fresh pickle.
You could see here that the 1st flower has 6 petals while the 2nd only has 5, its because they’re just different varieties. The 5 star petal will grow into a bigger fruit than the 6 star one.
Now, lets talk about family. Chilli has quite some siblings we all know them in our kitchen.
1- Solanum lycopersicum aka tomato(think about tomato which loaded with lycopene, the great antioxidant). Want to get to know tomato a lil bit better? Go watch tomato episode from
2- Solanum tuberosum aka potato(the part that we love to eat from potato plant called tuber not the the root, thanks to Nicole from for telling us how does potato grow)
3- Capsicum annuum
This includes bell pepper, jalapeno and round shaped pepper.
4- Solanum melongena aka Eggplant aka Aubergine
They have little flower similar with the chili’s flower which colour range from white to purple.
There are plenty of plant which happen to be chilli’s sibling like Black Nightshade(Solanum nigrum), Ground Berry aka Golden Berry(Physalis angulata), Jerusalem Cherry(Solanum pseudocapsicum) and many more.
