The word OSTOMY indicates a type of surgery that is needed to make a hole (stoma) on certain body parts. The following are the example why such surgery is performed:
1. Suffering malignancy of the larynx and must be removed, which means removal of the vocal cords as well. For that we need a hole (stoma) to assist breathing and speaking skills. In these patients, rehabilitation should be done in the form of training speech using digestive tract, called Talking Esophagus.
2. Suffering from gastrointestinal malignancy (colon) or the urinary tract, thus losing the ability to defecate or urinate normally. As a result, these patients should use additional tools through the stoma to collect the body wastes. Stoma creation may be temporary or permanent
There are 4 types of of OSTOMY surgery:
1. Laryngectomy (opening of the larynx)
