Aging affects all tissues of the human body, including the hair. With age, the hair follicle undergoes functional aging, referred to as senile alopecia. This condition is characterized by non-androgen-dependent, diffuse hair loss (not limited to the scalp), affecting men and women, with typical onset over the age of 50 [๐ญ,๐ฎ].
Many scientific studies show that hair density declines with age, although this process is gradual and influenced by multiple factors. Both intrinsic and extrinsic factors associated with aging lead to reduced activity of hair follicle stem cells and melanocytes, resulting in alterations in hair fiber growth and pigmentation. Because hair follicles are highly energy-dependent structures requiring substantial metabolic resources for hair production and stem cell renewal, age-related reductions in systemic energy availability may contribute to impaired hair growth. Quantitative measurements of scalp hair demonstrate a statistically significant reduction in hair density over time, becoming more noticeable after the third or fourth decade of life, particularly in women, in whom it often intensifies during menopause [๐ฎโ๐ฐ]. This trend has been confirmed across different populations and ethnic groups, suggesting that age-related hair thinning occurs independently of overt hair loss disorders [๐ฏโ๐ฑ].
Westgate et al. [6], in their article on hair longevity, reviewed scientific evidence supporting a holistic approach to managing age-related hair loss. They emphasized that this strategy represents an important component of the emerging concept of hair longevity, targeting the hair follicle, scalp, and hair fiber, with particular focus on maintaining the anagen phase to preserve healthy hair during aging [๐ฒ,๐ณ].
