(Part 1 of 2) Yesterday, in partnership with the Indonesian Government we visited Gili Trawangan, a part of Lombok severely impacted by the recent earthquakes that have displaced thousands upon thousands of people here.
When we arrived in Gili Trawangan, the enormity of the situation suddenly became apparent. What was once a bustling tourism metropolis, was now a desolate and practically lifeless island. We were told by locals there that prior to the earthquake tourism was booming with upwards of 15,000 guests staying on the island. In stark contrast, current day Gili Trawangan only has approximately 100 guests and businesses are struggling to keep afloat. Despite this, most of the island is open to tourists with most of the beachfront hotels, bars and restaurants open for business. Many of the resorts and private villas, too, have limited accommodation available.
It was only when we ventured inland the true scale of the devastation was realized. Many buildings were damaged beyond repair with clean up efforts still ongoing.
It is situations like this where the people of Lombok really need help from people like you. Any bit of assistance helps the Lombok Community. By following the GoFundMe link below, your support helps with providing fresh food, safe drinking water, sports equipment and the appropriate resources for building wet weather shelter.
