❤️ Welcome to episode 20 of My Story series!  My heart had led me back to Bali and I leased the land in Ubud that my Balinese friend had shown me. There, in the middle of working rice fields, I would build my house and yoga studio.

I had the design in my head and could see it clearly. It is a house blended in with the surrounding nature. But because I had envisioned an unusual circular design, it was difficult for the local architect to draw up the plans for my dream home.

I was still based in Azerbaijan at the time, and it was an architect there who immediately understood what I wanted. Instead of a circle, she drew up plans for an 8-sided octagon because it was more aesthetic and structurally balanced.

8 is an auspicious number in yoga and many eastern cultures. And an octagon symbolizes the balance between heaven and earth, or the physical and spiritual worlds. So I like to say that the Ubud Yoga House has "its feet on the ground and its head in the sky"!

Join me again next week where I'll share about leaving Azerbaijan, to finally settle down where my heart belongs, in ✨Bali✨

Mission & Philosophy

Making yoga accessible for Every Body in an inclusive environment creating a sense of belonging and connection.

The Ubud Yoga House opened March 20, 2014, on the United Nations International Day of Happiness, with the intention of sharing the joy of yoga with others.

The founder is Sheila Burch, an American, who grew up in Seattle, Washington and lived for many years in Santa Barbara, California. Sheila first came to Ubud in 1985 while backpacking through Asia as part of a two year trip around the world, and in 2013 she moved permanently to Ubud, Bali, and opened the Ubud Yoga House.

Ubud Yoga House is a socially conscious business with a profit-sharing model that gives all teachers and full-time employees a share in the profits of the company. The business model also supports the John Fawcett Foundation by sponsoring mobile eye clinics offering free eye care and cataract surgery for Indonesians living near Ubud.
