So many riders I see have overactive pectorals (pec muscles) and biceps from physical work......this creates muscle imbalance, causing the shoulder to round forward and then giving increased tension on the rein and also increased risk of injury e.g. rotator cuff tear.
Try this Shoulder External rotation exercise for riding posture, lighter hands and upper limb stability. Build up to 30 reps, make sure to keep your shoulder blades back!
πŸ˜πŸ΄πŸ‘Œ

This exercise targets the four muscles of the rotator cuff. It is very important to have both strength and stabilization of the rotator cuff muscles to avoid injuries such as impingement and/or rotator cuff tears. Equipment: theraband or resistance band, and a towel rolled up. Start: Place the rolle...

Do you follow a routine before you saddle up your steed!??? Here’s our Top 5 Pre-ride Rider Warmup Protocols that will see you setting up for success ...
πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Make sure your body is warmed up for the Physical activity it is about to undertake eg. All our Equestrian Athletes are advised to run thru a series of shoulder, back, hip and leg stretches followed by P2 banded PGM activations to fire up their stabilizers before getting into the saddle
πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Making sure you have some type of ride plan is just as important as having a list when you go to the supermarket. If you go all in with no idea you can find yourself wandering around picking up things off shelves that are not necessarily helpful for your overall goal
πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Is your tack fitted correctly. You should make it a habit to always double check everything! Especially is you do not tack up your own mount. A double glance could save you from having to get off to adjust an annoyingly flapping strap that wasn’t in its keeper properly to begin with
πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Is your Horse stretched and warmed up just as well as you are. Don’t forget that he/she is an athlete too and his/her body needs the same love and attention before placing more demanding work on them
πŸ‘‰πŸΌ Take your time through warmup phases and establish exercises that prepare you and your steed properly. It’s not a race & trying to push toward an end result too fast could see you or your horse injured ~ SMART TRAINING πŸ€“

As physio's we talk a lot about "resistance" and " engaging" muscles, it can be a challenge to relay these messages to riders but when you can show immediate results ....you don't need to explain! I used resistance bands in a clinic this weekend to engage shoulder stabilisers, to engage abdominals and the immediate results were lighter, quieter hands, more extension in the trunk and suddenly the horse lifts his forehand and the rider has to shorten the rein, I've ordered Britta's rider specific bands (she invented her own-love her work!)
Looking forward to using them now at next clinic😁🐎πŸ’ͺ

Resistance bands have found their way into my daily gym routine. They’re insanely useful (and once you work up to the heavier bands, you feel all Hulk-like and fierce) and easy to work into j…
