Our third topic of for is Heart Health. Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in women and symptoms may not be the classic central chest pain.

Women may experience:
• Fatigue
• Breathlessness
• Nausea
• Jaw, back or shoulder pain
• Mild chest discomfort rather than severe pain

Protect your heart by:
• Checking blood pressure
• Knowing your cholesterol
• Staying active
• Managing stress
• Not smoking

Prevention matters and small changes make a big difference over time.

Day two's topic of for is Cervical Cancer. One of the most important things women can do for their health is attend regular cervical screening (smear tests).

Screening doesn’t test for cancer, it detects early cell changes before cancer develops.

In Ireland, the national programme is CervicalCheck, it offers free screening to eligible women.

If you’re due a smear, or have been putting it off, this is your reminder to book your appointment. If you do not know if you are due a smear check, you can check the register on the Cervical Check website:

A cervical screening test (previously known as a smear test) looks to see if you might be at greater risk of developing cervical cancer in the future. This is why it can be so effective in reducing the risk of cancer.

In honour of this Sunday 8th of March, this week we will be sharing simple, practical health advice, one topic each day, to help women prioritise their wellbeing. Today's topic is "Know your numbers":

Key numbers every woman should know:

Cholesterol
Blood sugar

Did you know next week is Cervical Cancer Prevention week? January is all about new healthy habits and looking after our bodies, why not take a moment to check if you are eligible for a routine cervical smear test? You do not need to be registered with the practice to avail of the free smear test.

Remember, screening is for those without symptoms. If you have any concerns regarding unusual vaginal bleeding, discharge or pain, please make an appointment to see your GP.

How to check the CervicalCheck register to see if your contact details are correct, when your next test is due. You can also find out how to opt-off the register or be added to it.

This is good advice. Simple (boring) measures will do all the detoxing you need. Avoid spending fortunes on January trends; it is mainly nonsense and people are eager to make money from you by selling you rubbish.

Happy New Year. How many woke up this morning saying, "The detox starts tomorrow...."

Before you start spending the €€€€ on teas, supplements, IV drips, and salt caves ---what REALLY works to start undoing the excesses of the holiday?

The short answer: none of it. And that's not a bad thing, actually! (unless, of course, you are reading this just after you put that €200 non-refundable booking on a coffee e***a earlier....)

Here's the science of why: Your liver and kidneys do this constantly -- and they are really, really good at it! They don't need any help, if they are healthy. If they are working -- you need nothing, good to go!

(If your kidneys or liver aren't working?? This is a serious organ failure problem and you need a hospital, urgently. Liver disease is common enough, but if you are worried, you do need a qualified doctor -- not a "clinic" pushing milk thistle.)

What can you do to help your body stay on top of its detox duty? The boring stuff really works to keep your natural detox organs healthy: reduce alcohol intake, eat a healthy diet, stop smoking/vaping, and make sure you get some regular physical activity (seriously - exercise is great for your liver!) But how is the wellness industry going to make money out of that?

Did you know? January is peak season for marketing the wellness woo. It's always a good idea to invest in your health - but unless you have alot of excess €€€ in the family budget, bringing the science helps you make the most informed choices to get the most value for your €.

[If you are new to following, I've unpacked the science on supplements, salt caves, detoxes, and drips before. If you need a deeper dive into the science, you can read back on the practice Blog. Link to Blog in Bio.]
