I just want to talk about normal newborn behaviour. Sadly there is a lot of pressure on newborns to be self sufficient very quickly.

However the reality is that in those first few months they are completely dependant on their parents/ primary care givers.
They are at home on your chest, in your arms.
They need to be close to you. They do sleep for short periods and wake often.
They need connection to regulate themselves.
It is a massive change to go from a dim, warm fluid environment where you never feel hunger to a bright harsh environment where your senses are on overdrive. Brightness, cold on your skin getting clothes changed, clothes on your skin, hunger, change in smells, unfamiliar noises these are all big things for our newborns.

As mothers and fathers we are hard wired to respond to our babies, it is a normal response and we should be supported to respond to our babies.

As a Doula I want to help support families as they find their own way with their newborn. We all parent in our own way and it's my aim to
Take care of you, so you can take care of baby.

If you are looking for support please get in contact via aoifegdoula@gmail.com or DM. I offer a free 30 minute phone consultation to see if my services are something that will suit your needs.

This week is World Doula Week. This time last year, I had just completed my training with Krysia .ie and I was so full of energy and enthusiasm. One year on my enthusiasm is as high but my energy is definitely lower!! And that's ok as I know in my heart this is the direction I want to move in and that when the time is right it will become more of a full time career and not "just" my passion project!

I'm currently in my radiotherapy world working 4 days in the hospital and being a mum to my 2 children so it's not surprising that at times it can be very hard to carve out time for my doula work. Yet when I do it just feels right and is where I need to be.

I'm excited this year to add becoming a Friends of Breastfeeding Buddy to my doula CV! Meeting other mothers as they navigate their breastfeeding journey is exciting and rewarding. We're halfway through our training and I'm loving every minute!

Happy World Doula Week to all my Doula colleagues! You are a fantastic bunch of humans and I'm so delighted to have found my village!!

As some of you may know I've recently signed up to become A Friends of Breastfeeding Buddy. The idea is once I'm all trained up, I'll be linked up with any new mamas looking for support in the Limerick area.
We had our first day of training a few weeks back and it was fantastic. I met a wonderful bunch of women all sharing the same passion to support new breastfeeding families and to further normalise breastfeeding in Irish society!!

Thanks to the fantastic Maria for her knowledge and the fabulous for a great day of training!

I feel very grateful and fortunate to have enjoyed 2022! Personally it's been one of my best!
2014 to 2018, the years of our fertility journey were tough going.

While my early years of motherhood were amazing they also terrified me and left me feeling anxious and scared.

In 2022, I feel like I've started to settle into being "mammy". By that I mean I'm comfortable in the chaos that is trying to parent 2 small tiny humans who have taken control over our entire life!

It's also the year I've moved into my doula role and without sounding mad I truly feel like I've found where I'm meant to be. I've loved making some incredible new friendships, finding my tribe, learning so much daily and the adventure overall!!

It's only just starting so watch this space xx

I feel Sadhbh and I are winding down in our feeding journey. She's 18 months and with me working late in the hospital some evenings she's cut way back on feeds. I feel my supply has dropped. Now for her its the occasional snuggle and comfort she needs.

I feel so grateful our journey has lasted this long and if you'd told me when Fiachra was 5 weeks I would go on to feed him for 9 months I would not have believed you.

Each feeding journey is different and for me support has meant everything in both my journeys.

A mention on the book by , a fantastic resource for anyone experiencing the high emotions surrounding a difficult breastfeeding path.

And a big thank you to my wonderfully talented friend Niamh for my crochet b**b!!

HSE National Breastfeeding Week 2022, 1-7 October

I'm surprised and delighted to still be feeding Sadhbh who is now nearly 17 months. After a rocky start with Fiachra, managing to feed to 9 months was one of my proudest achievements.

This week is so important to help normalise breastfeeding and celebrate all things Breast and Chestfeeding.

This year's theme,
Expert Help Every Step of the Way
Means a lot to me as I certainly needed a lot of help establishing and maintaining my breastfeeding journey with Fiachra
Excellent support from my midwife in the labour ward after birth for
Skin to Skin and our first feed
Encouragement from my public health nurse
Fantastic support from my lactation consultant
The amazing humans
Not to mention the unwavering support from Shane, our families and friends. All of whom were experts at helping and encouraging us along the way.

As a doula it's a joy to be able to sit with a new parent and listen to their struggles and then work with them to find breastfeeding solutions to breastfeeding problems. I'm always delighted to signpost my clients to reliable resources that will help them achieve their own breastfeeding goals. Having survived the rough road of triple feeding I'm happy to wash and sort out all the pump paraphernalia, cook some easy one handed snacks that can sit in your fridge and be ready for you to grab at any hour, do some household chores around the house while you steal some much needed sleep!!
