What Causes a C-Section Overhang? 🤔👶
If you’ve had a C-section, you might notice a little “overhang” or a fold of skin above your incision. Here’s what causes it:
Scar Tissue & Healing: After a C-section, the body needs time to heal. Scar tissue can form under the skin, sometimes creating a “pouch” above the incision. This can give the area a more pronounced appearance.
Skin Stretching: Pregnancy causes significant skin stretching, and sometimes, even after the baby is born, that skin doesn’t always snap back. Weight changes or hormonal shifts can also impact skin elasticity.
Fat Distribution: Hormonal changes post-pregnancy can lead to fat being stored around the midsection, contributing to a little extra pouching overhang.
Muscle Separation: Diastasis recti (separation of abdominal muscles) is common after pregnancy and can affect how the skin and tissue sit around the incision.
Abdominal tone: Strength and tone will affect the the look of the tummy and weak muscles can make the pouch look more pronounced.
Posture: A signficant anterior pelvic tilt posture will make any pouch or overhang look more pronounced.
🌸 C-section healing will vary from person to person and you may experience none/some/all of these. A course of physiotherapy can address many of these factors so if you’re struggling with your c-section recovery get in touch.
