Life is a Dream
In 1992 I took my family to the Sundance at Green Grass South Dakota. We received the blessings of that ceremony. But we almost didn't make it. It's a long story. I had reserved a van and then canceled the reservation. Deciding to purchase a VW camper instead. But the VW camper ended up having serious problems so I had to return it. When I tried to rebook a rental there was nothing to be found anywhere. We were panicked with only a few days to go. All of a sudden I got a call from the car rental agency that a van was waiting for me. Someone had double booked. When I got the keys for the van I looked up in the sky. A white cloud turned into the face of Pete Catches, a Lakota medicine man from Pine Ridge that we had met two months earlier. We visited him on the way to Sun Dance and told him this story. He just laughed.
Green Grass reservation is part of the vast Cheyenne River Indian Reservation. . Arvol Looking Horse was the Sundance chief. He is the keeper of the famous scared peace pipe the Čhaŋnúŋpa. Some years ago he came to Ireland, unbeknownst to me, and did a four horse dance ceremony in the very center of the country in a place known as Hill of Uisneach. The Hill is famous for the ancient signal fires that were lit on the first of May that could be seen by most of the country and its Dream Stone, a glacial erratic.
