BRACE Community Response

BRACE Community Response Ballymun Recovery Addiction Community Education, (BRACEi), s a Community Response to people experiencing difficulties with Drug and Alcohol use.
(1)

Our training centre offers a range of accreditted courses to empower people and communities. The Ballymun Youth Action Project (BYAP) is a community response to drug and alcohol misuse. As a response that has come from within the community of Ballymun, we strive to reduce the negative impact of drug and alcohol use on the lives of individuals and families, and on this community. We seek to do this through
* Working with individuals who are using, reducing, or who have stopped using drugs and/or alcohol;
* Supporting families impacted by drug and alcohol issues;
* Supporting the community in their work of prevention and intervention as responses to drug and alcohol issues;
* And building capacity through training and research. We believe
* That individuals with addictions can and do recover;
* The families of those affected by addiction do not have to cope alone;
* That the community can be an effective place to recover. And our ethos is rooted in
* Valuing individuality;
* Valuing the capacity of individuals, families and communities.

We are delighted open a second Neurodivergence, Trauma and Substance Use course, run in conjunction withTSK Academy, for enrollments. Contact Naomi to book your place.
Clients accessing substance use services are disproportionately likely to be neurodivergent, particularly Autistic and ADHD individuals, many of whom are undiagnosed or late diagnosed. When neurodivergent needs are not recognised or accommodated, clients may disengage, feel misunderstood, or withdraw from services despite significant need. In services working with trauma, substance use, domestic violence and homelessness, neurodivergent presentations are often misinterpreted as resistance, lack of motivation, or non-engagement. Standard therapeutic approaches — including language use, pacing, small talk, and regulation strategies — can unintentionally increase distress, hypervigilance, or shutdown.
This training responds directly to these challenges by equipping practitioners with practical, skills-based strategies to recognise neurodivergent presentations, adapt engagement approaches, and build trust over time. The workshop is grounded in neuro-affirmative, trauma-informed practice, with Motivational Interviewing principles embedded throughout to support autonomy, collaboration and sustained engagement.

Today we continued the powerful collaboration between Recovery Academy Ireland , BRACE Community Response and the Irish Prison Service. Week 7 of the Community Addiction Studies course covered the Wheel of Change.
The women in the Dochas Centre who are part of the Boxing Clever programme continue to show incredible engagement, curiosity, and enthusiasm for learning. Their openness and commitment to growth is truly inspiring.

Following the launch of the Women in Recovery book, who shared how important connection and opportunities were in rebuilding their lives, we are committed to supporting women in prison to gain recognised qualifications. Creating access to learning means creating more choices, more confidence, and more possibilities when they return to their communities.

Education, connection, and belief in change can open doors that once seemed closed. Today was another step forward.

Yesterday we celebrated the launch of Women in Recovery Stories — a must-read for anyone wanting to understand the complexities of addiction and recovery.

This powerful book is authored by 11 heroes, whose stories are filled with love, courage, honesty, and hope. 💜
A special thank you to the incredible eleven women from the BRACE Infant Parent Support Project, the IPSP team (past and present), and the Ballymun Local Drugs and Alcohol Task Force for bringing this important book to life.
Thank you to for launching the book, and to (the Saol sisters) for their beautiful singing and uplifting energy.
Thanks also to Dee and all the panel speakers, , and for supporting such a meaningful event.
Thanks to the Women's Cafe (BRACE) for sharing their CHIME project.

Women deserve to have their voices heard when it comes to the challenges they face — from problematic substance use and mental health to the realities of parenting.
We are committed to continuing this conversation and advocating for supports that truly meet women’s needs. Let’s keep the momentum going

Our Community Reinforcement Approach course is now open for bookings. Community Reinforcement Approach (CRA) training prepares front line workers to use evidence-based behavioural techniques, such as social skill-building, functional analysis of behavior, communication skills and problem-solving strategies, to make a sober lifestyle more rewarding than a substance using lifestyle. The training, with Dr. Laura O'Reilly, covers identifying triggers, reinforcing positive behaviors, and implementing behaviour change strategies and choices. Places are limited

We are delighted to partner with Patricia Allen Garrett and host this very valuable course for staff involved in the caring field.
This workshop will:
• Look at what Secondary Stress Disorder is;
• Examine its characteristics of Vicarious Trauma and Compassion Fatigue;
• Identify characteristics that practitioners may be experiencing;
• Reflect on how practitioners may be unconsciously and unintentionally protecting themselves from and/or defending against the vicarious traumatic material encountered in work and the potential impact of this on the people they work with;
• Develop an ethical and self-tailored care plan to help increase resilience in the face of secondary traumatic injuries such as Compassion Fatigue and Vicarious Trauma in a bid to move towards Compassion Resilience.
