When a particular part carrying an old wound is triggered, it tends to take us over so we can't see outside of the worldview of that part.

When we relate to a triggered part from a place of compassion, we become dis-identified with the part and can make wiser choices.

Something that can so easily derail our practice – and even lead to people abandoning mindfulness all together – is feeling that you are not doing the practice right or correctly.

This is a common feeling amongst meditators, but it is based on an understandable, but misguided premise. Mindfulness is unlike most things in our life in that there is no “good” or “bad” meditation. There is no “right” or “wrong” outcome of a meditation practice – from each practice we get something or learn something or simply allows ourselves to be as we are.

Mindfulness is not about trying to change the moment, but to learn to accept what is observe our experience and let ourselves off the constant treadmill of striving, worry and dopamine-driven-general-lunacy that is modern life.

If your mind wanders a lot, then that’s fine. If you are calm, then that’s fine. If you are angry, sad, happy, tired, restless, joyful and all the other possible emotional and physical responses, that is fine. It comes, it goes, we let it pass.

Meditation is its own reward. The benefits that come are by-products. They are not the goal, and they will unfurl at their own pace. You cannot rush it. You just turn up and breathe. Everything else take s care of itself – no matter how long that takes.

The phrase "standing on the shoulders of giants" comes to mind when I think about delivering any mindfulness programmes way out on the Beara peninsula. I'm looking forward to this and feeling so very grateful.

Impermanence is one of those misunderstood aspects of mindfulness. It is a very simple teaching – essentially everything is finite and has its time – but it has profound implications on our practice, how we view others and for cultivating kindness.

Impermanence can easily be misunderstood as a little off putting, even depressing as at its heart is our own impermanence. But this is to miss the depth and beauty of the idea.

When we realise that everything is finite, we know that suffering is finite, it too will pass. It helps us work compassionately with suffering until it passes. It also helps us realise that we don’t have to cling to good experiences, but rather to enjoy them fully when they are here.

Impermanence also helps create that shared humanity with others, the understanding that we all want to be happy, healthy and safe and that we all suffer. Impermanence leads to greater care and kindness for others as we traverse this life.

Impermanence is bitter-sweet but beautiful and learning to accept impermanence will enrich our lives.

If you would like to join our mindfulness community for some shared experience, we offer Free Online Daily Meditations Monday – Friday 10:30 and 19:00

Hold yourself gently

Mindhaven (founded by Susan O’Regan) trains people in the skills of mindfulness and self-compassion. Susan has spent over twenty years working as a community and youth worker and training and facilitating groups. She firmly believes in people’s capacity to create meaningful change in their lives and in their communities.

Being naturally contemplative and reflective, Susan discovered mindfulness for herself almost a decade ago, at a time when stress had become a huge factor in her own life.

Being introduced to mindfulness had a big impact on her personally and for years Susan participated on various weekend retreats in both Ireland and the UK. She found herself drawn towards compassion based mindfulness and so in 2015, embarked on a three year Msc (Studies in Mindfulness) run by Aberdeen University in conjunction with the Mindfulness Association.

She found a natural synergy between mindfulness, compassion, community work and adult education. Since graduating, she has been utilising these tools with the wide range of diverse groups that she regularly works with.
