Congratulations to this bunch who have progressed to the quarter-final stage of the Munster U15 Hurling Championship following a comprehensive victory over St Colman’s, Midleton.
St Colman’s tested the SMGS defence, but they were met by a disciplined and resilient unit, where Cillian O’Callaghan and Conor Lawless stood out with a series of timely interceptions and clearances in defence that laid the platform for what was to follow.
Gradually, SMGS began to gain control, largely thanks to the commanding presence of Joe O’Leary around midfield. His energy and distribution helped swing momentum in the Blarney side’s favour, allowing them to take a deserved lead into the break.
The second half saw Scoil Mhuire gan Smál move through the gears. Their sharper passing and improved efficiency in front of goal stretched the Midleton defence, with Eoghan O’Keeffe proving the difference in attack. The forward was in excellent form, finishing the game with a tally of 2-2, while Alex Scott’s movement and awareness ensured the pressure was maintained throughout.
Captain Jack Donovan also played his part during his time on the field, contributing to a strong team performance before being withdrawn as the result became more secure.
This success is a reflection of a well-blended panel made up of players from Blarney, Grenagh, Whitechurch, Inniscarra and Lee Gaels, highlighting the strong hurling links across the area. The team is coached by Eugene McCarthy, with the support of teachers Colm Kiely and Tom O’Brien.
In the end, what started as a closely contested championship tie developed into a comfortable win, and Scoil Mhuire gan Smál will now look forward with confidence to a quarter-final showdown in the next round.

Munster Win for our u15 hurlers.

SMGS 2-16
Carraigtwohill CC 2-14

On Monday last in a wet and windy Pairc Ui Caoimh our u15 hurlers got their championship underway. Winning the toss and choosing to play against the wind, SMGS raced into a two point lead courtesy of points from Jack Donovan and Darragh O'Driscoll. Carraigtwohill soon wrestled control of matters and went on to register 6 unanswered points, Dylan Lynch in goal making some crucial interventions in this period. A goal from Tadhg O'Connell kept SMGS in the game along with some excellent free taking from O'Driscoll. A goal for Carraig just before the short whistle left SMGS with it all to do, trailing 2-11 to 1-7.

In the second half our boys tore into the task, scoring the first point direct from the throw in. Half time substitutes Conor Moriarty and Shane Dineen made immediate impacts helping to shut down the Carraig puckouts. SMGS brought the game level with 5 minutes remaining. Evan O'Mahony Ryan O'Leary, and Tadhg Mulqueen made crucial interventions at the back, and Jamie Cremin was a constant threat in attack. With time almost up,Carraig had regained a two point lead. Then came a moment of magic with a combination of Donovan and Dineen fashioning the all important goal. O'Driscoll added the insurance point for a famous win.

So proud of our TY students and TY co-ordinator Ms. O' Keeffe who spoke so well on the segment on David McCullagh Show on RTÉ Radio One this morning. The students outlined a lovely initiative happening each Wednesday in the school where senior citizens of the community have been dropping in for tea, a chat and some tech support. All welcome on Wednesdays. 😊
