Congratulations to this bunch who have progressed to the quarter-final stage of the Munster U15 Hurling Championship following a comprehensive victory over St Colman’s, Midleton.
St Colman’s tested the SMGS defence, but they were met by a disciplined and resilient unit, where Cillian O’Callaghan and Conor Lawless stood out with a series of timely interceptions and clearances in defence that laid the platform for what was to follow.
Gradually, SMGS began to gain control, largely thanks to the commanding presence of Joe O’Leary around midfield. His energy and distribution helped swing momentum in the Blarney side’s favour, allowing them to take a deserved lead into the break.
The second half saw Scoil Mhuire gan Smál move through the gears. Their sharper passing and improved efficiency in front of goal stretched the Midleton defence, with Eoghan O’Keeffe proving the difference in attack. The forward was in excellent form, finishing the game with a tally of 2-2, while Alex Scott’s movement and awareness ensured the pressure was maintained throughout.
Captain Jack Donovan also played his part during his time on the field, contributing to a strong team performance before being withdrawn as the result became more secure.
This success is a reflection of a well-blended panel made up of players from Blarney, Grenagh, Whitechurch, Inniscarra and Lee Gaels, highlighting the strong hurling links across the area. The team is coached by Eugene McCarthy, with the support of teachers Colm Kiely and Tom O’Brien.
In the end, what started as a closely contested championship tie developed into a comfortable win, and Scoil Mhuire gan Smál will now look forward with confidence to a quarter-final showdown in the next round.
