There’s been a lot of understandable anxiety around infant formula recalls, so here’s a clear, grounded update for parents.
This update is specific to Stage 1 (first infant) formula.
What’s going on?
A precautionary recall has been issued for specific batches of Stage 1 powdered formula sold in Ireland. This relates to a potential contamination issue identified during routine checks. Importantly, this is batch-specific, not a blanket issue with all formula or with whole brands.
Which Stage 1 brands are involved?
Some batches of Aptamil, Cow & Gate, and SMA Stage 1 have been recalled. Other commonly used Stage 1 formulas, including Kendamil, HiPP Organic, and Mamia (ALDI), are not part of the recall.
Is it safe to switch Stage 1 formula?
Yes. It is safe to switch between standard Stage 1 formulas if your tin is affected or if you’re unsure. Babies do not need a slow transition when moving between typical Stage 1 formulas. The priority is feeding your baby safely and confidently.
What should parents do now?
Check the batch code and best-before date on your Stage 1 tin. If it’s part of the recall, don’t use it and follow the retailer or manufacturer advice. If it’s not from a recalled batch, it is safe to continue.
A reminder
Formula feeding is safe, regulated, and essential healthcare. Recalls reflect systems working, not parental failure.
This information is current as of today, Fwb 6th 2025.
I’ll update if anything changes.
If you’re unsure about a specific Stage 1 product, ask. No panic. No guilt. Just feeding babies.
