Rebecca came to me with a nasty proxomal hamstring tendinopathy that just wouldn't clear up & despite a very detailed running plan and strength program. The very real fear there was not being able to travel and compete in this race. The why behind what motivates a client is so important, as you can see below

Rebecca : "Once I knew I'd be ready for the start line of London Marathon I decided to fundraise for the Irish Cancer Society, in memory of my parents and my uncle, and in support of friends and family who are cancer survivors, or currently undergoing treatment. I was so touched by the messages I received with personal stories of those who are living life to the full after successful treatment, also messages from people who told me that they were newly diagnosed awaiting treatment, and other messages sharing memories and stories of those they'd lost. Carrying those messages and memories made the marathon extremely emotional, but they are also what carried me through the tougher miles"

"I went to Martin with a hamstring injury that wouldn't clear up. With London Marathon coming up, he assessed my injury, gave me a tailored rehab plan, and checked in regularly to see how it was going. As I progressed through the rehab, he tweaked the plan to get me running again, building my miles and giving me the best chance to get enough training in to complete the marathon. I was delighted to get to the start line. I'd highly recommend Martin as a physio"

Think about this...

You hurt your knee/shoulder/back/foot, etc

Normally, when this happened in the past, it would get better within days, or maybe a few weeks at most

But this time...

This time it's taking months

This seems wrong

This seems like there is something else going on

So you see a physical therapist

You see some improvement over a few months but it's still not better

I mean, it IS getting better, but it seems too slow

In your mind, it should be completely better by now

"Do I need surgery to fix it?"

"Probably...I mean, it should have been fixed by now", you say to yourself

So you get surgery

You're happy knowing that now the problem is FIXED!

You start rehab again, although now you're much more limited then you were before surgery

But, of course...this is EXPECTED!

You know that it's going to take a while...months, maybe even up to a year to get back to normal...

But you're confident that NOW it's worth the effort because NOW the root cause was addressed

It's only a matter of time

So you're patient...

You rehab religiously

You dedicate several hours every day to get better

And eventually...months down the road...you are!

This is what happens with A LOT of people

You don't get the results you want fast enough WITHOUT SURGERY (usually within a few weeks or months), so you think that it wasn't working and you stop rehabbing (even if you were slowly getting better)

You get surgery, and then immediately your MINDSET SHIFTS and you're ready to put MONTHS/YEARS into rehab to recover because NOW THE PROBLEM IS FIXED!

But do you see the issue here?

What if you put the SAME amount of time, effort, confidence, and patience into your rehab WITHOUT SURGERY?

Would the results be similar?

A lot of research now shows that this is exactly the case...

When you compare long-term surgical vs. non-surgical outcomes for many common musculoskeletal injuries/pain problems, they are similar or the same

Not ALL cases...some truly do benefit from surgery

But MANY don't

So if it seems like your rehab is taking longer than it should (even if you're still making small improvements), stick with it!

It will probably take longer than you expected!
