FIRST AID GUIDANCE LEAFLET – GAA TEAM
1. Stay Safe First
Put on gloves before treating anyone.
Check the area is safe before approaching the player.
If the injury is serious, do not move the player and call emergency services (999/112).
2. Common Injuries & What To Do
Bleeding / Cuts
Apply firm pressure with gauze or a dressing.
Clean around the wound with an alcohol‑free wipe.
Cover with a sterile dressing or plaster.
If bleeding doesn’t stop → seek medical review.
Sprains / Strains (ankle, knee, wrist)
Use R.I.C.E.:
R – Rest: Stop playing immediately.
I – Ice: Apply an ice pack for 10–15 minutes.
C – Compression: Use a crepe or cohesive bandage.
E – Elevation: Raise the injured limb if possible.
If the player cannot bear weight or pain is severe → refer for assessment.
Impact Injuries / Bruising
Apply a cold pack for 10 minutes.
Continue to monitor swelling.
If worsening or player feels dizzy, nauseated, or confused → remove from play and assess for concussion.
Concussion (suspected)
If in doubt – SIT THEM OUT.
Signs may include:
Headache, dizziness
Confusion, slow to get up
Nausea or vomiting
Blurred vision
Do NOT allow return to play.
Refer for medical evaluation immediately.
Eye Injuries
Rinse with sterile eyewash.
Do not rub the eye.
Use an eye pad dressing if irritated.
Seek medical care if pain, vision changes, or foreign body suspected.
Nosebleeds
Player sits upright, head slightly forward.
Pinch the soft part of the nose for 10 minutes.
Do not tilt head back.
If bleeding persists → seek medical advice.
Breathing Problems / Collapse
Check response and breathing.
Call 999/112 if unresponsive or breathing abnormal.
Use CPR face shield if needed.
Keep player warm with foil blanket.
3. When to Call Emergency Services
Suspected spinal or neck injury
Severe bleeding not controlled
Difficulty breathing / collapse
Suspected broken limb
Head injury with confusion, vomiting, or loss of consciousness
