I agonised over whether I should post this or not as it’s extremely raw and vulnerable. I decided to post to show people that
1. I’m human too, and even though I’m trained in mental health, no one escapes anxiety.
2. I wanted to get the message across that anxiety can be overridden and beaten through using CBT techniques.
3. The only way the brain learns is through experience.
I’m posting this now while sitting in the carpark waiting for week 2 of training to start, and I’m so excited!! I’m still buzzing from the experience of beating my anxiety, not giving in to the fear that my body was wrongly sending me signals for, and inevitably increasing my brains power to rewire itself.
Neuroplasticity is the brains ability to rewire and form new neural pathways based on experience, thus improving overall brain health. The more new things we do, the more we reduce the chances of Alzheimer’s, dementia etc.
Through the use of the “Hot Cross Bun” Strategy we can successfully address our thoughts, feelings, physiological symptoms and behaviours/actions. (DM us with your email if you’d like a copy of this technique).
In this example I thought “I can’t do this, I’ll be no good at it, people will see that I’m a clutz and they’ll not want to have anything to do with me”.
This caused feelings of inadequacy, fear, anxiety and this my physiological symptoms had my heart racing, short, sharp breathing, sick stomach, tight throat, sweaty palms, tingly feet and feeling faint at times. Behaviourally all I wanted to do was run and hide.
Instead I challenged these thoughts with more rationale ones of “We’re all starring from the same point (or similar), it’s all for fun, and even if I am not good at it, who cares?!”
I pushed through and did it and now my brain does not see training as a fearful activity anymore.
Please don’t suffer with anxiety, it can be helped. DM us for more info, we’re here to help!
