Gutted that it ended with a 1 point loss to Galway but thoroughly enjoyed the last few months working with a fantastic and dedicated group of lads on the Mayo Junior Team.

With running season getting into full swing, an interesting article into the running patterns of elite marathon runners. There has been a lot of discussion about the 'right' way to run especially relating to reducing heel strike but the take away from this seems that there is no one right way - even among the worlds best athletes.

Data from the last world championships suggests you shouldnโ€™t be concerned about your foot strike, no matter how you land

Stole this from my colleague Paul Kilcullen but its an interesting piece of research that backs a lot of what happens in my clinic. It showed that strength and balance work are much more important in preventing injuries than purely stretching.

Does this mean that you should stop stretching? Nope โ€“ it means that there are more beneficial ways to spend your time, where you will get more bang for your buck.

If you are having recurring issues and a large portion of your rehab is stretching/foam rolling then you maybe need to rethink your strategy. My first question would be why certain muscle always need stretching.

Its also important to recognise that strength training doesnโ€™t always mean your goal is to lift huge weights โ€“ its about your body being able to tolerate greater loads and stresses and more importantly your brain and nervous system learning to move safely under increasing loads and sudden changes in stresses.

If you are doing this work and still have recurring injuries then you need to sit down and have a complete rethink about what is going on with your body.

Is it possible to make diseases disappear? If weโ€™re talking about chronic diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart disease, then absolutely, says Dr. Rangan Chatterjee in his wonderfully insightful Ted Talk about functional medicine.
