πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ Congratulations to Paula & David on the safe arrival of baby Sean born in the Midwifery Led Unit - MLU, Cavan on the 22nd of November 2022. πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦

🀰 There is something very special about looking after a member of staff who attends our Unit for care during such an intimate & personal experience. When both parents are members of staff it gives us a great sense of pride in the great work we do in our Unit.πŸ‘

🀱 This is Paula & David's second baby. Sean's big sister Annie was born on the 13th of July 2020. πŸ‘§

🀰 The service was so convenient for Paula who could arrange her antenatal appointments around her work, and if she had any concerns she could just drop over to the unit for assessment & reassurance. πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ Paula, David & Annie we wish you much happiness with this precious little boy. πŸ’™

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘§ Congratulations to Aine & Patrick on the birth of little BlΓ‘ithΓn in the early hours of the morning on September 25th.πŸ‘Ά

🏑 Our photos were taken during a home visit at the Mulligan's home in Castleblayney 5 days after BlΓ‘ithΓn's birth.πŸ πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘§

🀰 Stress, anxiety, depression & lack of social support are associated with fear during pregnancy. πŸ€°πŸ’

🀰🀰 Nulliparous (a woman who hasn't given birth to a child) & parous (a woman who has given birth to a child) have similar levels of fear but for different reasons. 🀱🀱

🀚 The strongest predictor for fear in parous women is a previous negative birth experience.πŸ˜”

πŸ›€πŸ’πŸ‘« By creating a woman-centered birth environment where women can feel free & secure with a low risk of negative or traumatic birth experiences helps alleviate fear.πŸšΆβ€β™€οΈπŸ’πŸ’‘

πŸ‘‰πŸ‘‰The Midwifery Led Unit - MLU, Cavan offers a home from home birth environment alongside our Consultant Led Unit.πŸ‘

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§ Aine laboured & gave birth without any pain relief or intervention under the guidance of midwife Jess.πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘§

πŸŒΈπŸ’ Hello Imogen ❣🌸

πŸ©°πŸŽ€ Congratulations Emma & Patrick. πŸŽ€πŸ©°

πŸ‘ Baby Imogen's arrival has been awaited with bated breath by mum, dad & the Midwifery Led Unit - MLU, Cavan . 😊

🀰 Imogen is Emma & Patrick's second baby. πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦

πŸ¦Ήβ€β™‚οΈπŸ¦Ήβ€β™‚οΈ Back in early 2017 Emma booked with the MLU on her first pregnancy. Delighted that she was eligible to attend the service she embarked on a journey of all things natural. So much so that on the 9th of October 2017 Emma delivered baby Jake at home (not planned) with the support of two paramedics from Virginia, Eamonn & Trevor. πŸ¦Ήβ€β™‚οΈπŸ¦Ήβ€β™‚οΈ

πŸ’‘ On the morning of October 6th 2022 Emma & Patrick arrived to the MLU where she met midwife Jess & student midwife Chloe. Emma was only having very mild crampy type pains. Keen to have her baby in the MLU but knowing labour was not yet established Emma settled in to her birth environment. πŸ–₯πŸ›‹

πŸ‘Ά Within a few hours and with no intervention or pain relief Imogen arrived.πŸ’«

😊 As a top fan of this FB page & always there to support the Midwifery Led Unit - MLU, Cavan Emma we were absolutely delighted to care for you, Patrick & little Imogen @ our Unit. πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦

🌻😊 Breech Presentation 😊🌻

🌺 3% of babies are in the breech position @ 37 weeks of pregnancy. This means the baby hasn't turned to a head down position. It is much more common earlier in pregnancy.

🌼 You may be offered ECV (external cephalic version) which is a procedure to turn the baby to head down position. This is done by giving a medication to relax the womb, then a doctor uses their hands to turn the baby by pushing it clockwise or counterclockwise on the outside of your tummy. Monitoring of the baby with ultrasound & CTG is done before & after the procedure
🌹 ECV is generally offered @ 36-37 weeks.
Success rate is 50%.
ECV is suitable for you if you have an uncomplicated pregnancy only. Once the baby has turned to a head down position it usually stays that way.

🌸 Delivery of a baby who remains in a breech position is usually by elective caesarean section @39 weeks, especially for first time mums.

⚘ Your babys position in the womb is only of significance after 37 weeks of pregnancy.

πŸ—― Should you have any queries about the position of your baby please ask your midwife @ your next antenatal appointment.

🦠 Group B streptococcus (GBS) is a very common bacteria. It occurs naturally in many people. It typically causes no harm or symptoms. 😊

🀏 2-4 people in 10 carry GBS in the gut (bowel) & in women it may be found in the va**na. GBS is intermittent in nature, sometimes it is present & sometimes it's not. πŸ”¬

πŸ’ GBS is not sexually transmitted, nor is it a sign of ill health or poor hygiene. 🧼

πŸ’Š Antibiotics are recommended in labour for women with GBS. GBS may be detected on a va**nal or re**al swab or in a urine test. 🧫

πŸ‘‰ If you have had GBS in a previous pregnancy there is a 50% chance you will have it at the time of labour. πŸ‘ˆ

🀰 Many babies come into contact with GBS during labour & around birth. This usually causes no harm to your baby. However there is a small chance that your baby will develop GBS infection & become seriously ill. Around 1 in every 1750 newborn babies in Ireland & the UK become unwell in the first week after birth, usually within 12-24 hours of birth. Although GBS infection can make your baby very unwell, most babies will make a full recovery with treatment 🀱

😊 GBS does not exempt women from attending the Midwifery Led Unit - MLU, Cavan .
Should you have any queries or concerns, please discuss with your midwife at your first antenatal booking appointment. πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈ

πŸ₯ Cavan Monaghan Maternity Unit is one of 19 Maternity Units in the Republic of Ireland.πŸ₯

🀰🀰Since July 2004 we have had the privilege of operating one of the two Midwifery Led Units in Ireland. πŸ‘ΆπŸ‘Ά

🀱 Midwifery Led Care providers care to woman who are of normal or low risk during pregnancy.🀱

😊Antenatal care (during pregnancy) is provided in the unit where intra natal care (labour) takes place.
😊Care is delivered by a small team of midwives whom the woman establishes a trustworthy relationship with.
😊Postnatal care (after baby is born) is provided by the same team of midwives both in the Midwifery Led Unit & in the early days at home.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘¦β€πŸ‘¦πŸ’™πŸ’™ Marilyn pictured with her family yesterday returned to our Unit just 4 days after giving birth there.πŸ’™πŸ’™πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘¦β€πŸ‘¦

πŸ‘πŸ‘In Marilyn's own words yesterday "I knew the type of birth I wanted but thanks to the midwives Midwifery Led Unit - MLU, Cavan I was empowered to have exactly what I wanted."πŸ‘πŸ‘

Midwives are experts in supporting the normal physiology of labour & birth. Unfortunately, many years of routines & policies not based on evidence have disrupted the physiologic process of labour.

Here @ Midwifery Led Unit - MLU, Cavan we offer woman the choice to experience the full extent of physiologic labour.

We facilitate this by:
🌺 Delaying hospital admission until active labour.
🌸 Allow women to eat & drink regularly throughout all phases of labour.
🌻Provide intermittent auscultation of your baby's heartbeat.
🌼 Encouraging movement & using our birthing pools to assist with the natural process of labour.
😊 Utilise the relationship you have established with your midwife for emotional & psychological support during labour.

Today we had a lovely surprise visit from Chelsea, who experienced a completely natural physiological birth at our Unit. Chelsea was supposed in labour by midwives Liz, Jess & our 4th year student midwife Chloe. Her very supportive partner Gavin never left her side.

In Gavin's own words today "I feel like I'm coming back to visit family or something" captured the true ethos of our Unit.

And how lovely it was for us to see all three of you again, especially beautiful Esmé🌺

😊 It's Midwifery Led Care all the way for this lovely family.πŸ’

πŸ€—Little Kayla arrived in the still of the night @ 4:11am on the 18th of September under the watchful eyes of midwives Orlaith & Michelle.πŸ€—

🀱Our pictures show MLU midwife Siobhan & student midwife Alisha carrying out a home visit & newborn screening exam on little Kayla.πŸ€—
