Why do I always recommend using smaller and shorter writing utensils for kids??? Well… I’ve done the math 😂

Here is my daughter, who is 4, holding a typical school crayon. On the right is the size this would be compared to the size of my hand. It looks ridiculous right?

When we increase length and width of writing tools, it makes them more difficult to manoeuvre. It makes the little muscles of the hands work hard, tiring them quickly. This means we are more likely to use stabilising behaviours, like a thumb wrap. It can also mean that the brain has to focus on using this cumbersome tool, rather than on the actual writing.

Moral of the story, think short and skinny as a standard for writing tools ✍️

We have an exciting position available this summer! We are working on a project and need some extra help to get it over the line. This is a paid position and would be suitable for a new graduate OT awaiting registration. The position would run for July and August and is onsite in charleville with some flexibility to work from home.

PLEASE REMEMBER📣 When it comes to sensory regulation, it doesn’t have to look like a Pinterest worthy playroom, or an elaborate exercise routine, it doesn’t even have to look coordinated! Sensory regulation comes in all shapes and sizes and the goal should never be about how it looks, but about how it makes us feel. Someone might gain really high regulation from aggressive pacing and might get overwhelmed in an expensive sensory room, and THATS OK! Your not “doing it wrong”. We need to always take a step back and ask 1. What are they getting from this? 2. What affect is it having? 3. How can I support and facilitate the things that are helpful?

Did you know that we offer in school consultation days? These days have become increasingly popular and we have decided to add more dates for March and April.

A school consult day involves and OT coming out to your school. How you spend the time is completely unique to your school. It might involve small group training, observing in a classroom or designing and demonstrating movement breaks for groups of kids. We then follow up with any resources or recommendations needed!
