🙋 Have you heard of Snus? I hadn’t only for my nephews & working with teens - made me feel very old when I hadn’t a clue what they were on about! It’s not a new thing, but it is doing the rounds. It comes in little white/beige/brown pouches that look like mints or little teabags, tucked under the lip. No smoke and no smell, so very easy to hide. They come in little tins & can be purchased easily! That’s part of the appeal really because you can do it in school/public/at home & no one would realise!
🧐A lot of teens think it’s harmless or safer than va**ng or smoking. But each pouch can have as much (or more) ni****ne than a cigarette and that’s a lot for our developing teenage brains. The packaging looks sleek, the flavours sound fun, and it’s very easy to miss if you don’t know what you’re looking at.
✋ This isn’t about panicking at all! It’s about knowing. When we know what’s out there, we can have open, more confident chats with our teens about it. If you find out your teen’s tried it, TRY to stay curious instead of panicked (easier said than done we know).
🙌 We want them to be able to come to us with this stuff, rather than think they’re gonna get in huge trouble - “What made you want to try it?” “What do your friends think about it?” “How does it make you feel?”. In this way, you’re not trying to catch them out, you’re trying to understand their world 🌍 (while possibly panicking a bit on the inside).
😈 I know I was a divil when I was a teenager 🤪 We want to try to support them through this stage, as safely as we can 👏
