Ditching Diet Culture and healing our relationship with food does not have to be serious business all the time...

It is ok to have some fun with it too. And I would argue that when we let go of dieting we free up more physical and mental space to tend to the things that we truly enjoy and care about.

What are the things that nourish you?

Books and reading is pretty high on mine.

Here with a that food never need to be earned or that you have to feel guilty for eating it, no matter what it it.

Morality has crept into our food choices through categorising food as "good" or "bad".

But though food has different types of nutrition profiles and nutrients in them, they all are morally neutral. Or at least we can let them be so!

SE2 – Ep5: The Impact of Social Media with Nadia Felsch

In this episode with the lovely Naida Felsch, we go wide and look at topics such as the impact social media and the content we consume there can have on our relationship we have with food. We talk about the intersection of Diet Culture & Wellness Culture and how easy it can be to get sucked into following the wellness guru in pursuit of health (and possibly thinness and happiness).

Nadia Felsch, BHSc (she/her) is a nutritionist, intuitive eating counsellor, feminist and fat activist. She is a white, thin, woman living on unceded Gadigal Country in Sydney Australia with her partner and two miniature dachshunds named Toast and Avocado. Her work is underpinned by the great unlearning of, and healing from the the typical narratives we all hold about food, health and our bodies. Nadia supports folks to re-connect with and trust their innate body wisdom, to find what works for them in how they care for and relate to their bodies - smashing norms along the way!

Both Nadia and I have been on Instagram since the early days and both our work, how we think about ‘health’ has evolved over the years and we discuss this too.
There may be some points in this conversation that feel controversial, this is what Nadia means when she talks about the “unlearnings”.

If you are feeling more out of control around food at the moment then you did a few weeks ago, this might be why...

Restriction, aka. dieting is one of the leading drivers for binge eating. It is not the only one, but it is almost always a major contributor.

Sometimes you can stay successfully on a diet for weeks or even months, but eventually the body says "enough is enough" and then when food becomes available it becomes really difficult to keep on restricting.

isn't about lack of willpower or an unruly body. Restiction, dieting and under eating leading to bingeing is rooted in physiology. Your body needs food to function well.

How do you get out of it? By letting go of restriction. Which can be easier said than done.

It is early January and the diet messages are E V E R Y W H E R E.

I know the siren song can call you back for "just one more time". And that is ok. And also you don't have to go down that road again.

Here are five friendly reminders that you don't have to diet in January or any other time of the year.

SE2 - Episode 4: When Trauma is at the table with Melanie Hargraves.

In this week's episode I have the pleasure of speaking with Melanie Hargraves.

Melanie (she/her) is an experienced, curious and compassionate dietitian interested in the way trauma can impact eating and body image. Qualifying over 10 years ago, she blends her lived experience with this expertise to provide pragmatic and practical support for anyone struggling.

You can find her on instagram (and you should give her a follow because her content is ace!)

This conversation focuses on exploring what trauma is and what we mean by Big T and Little T. Melanie also shares some of her own experiences around food and we dive into how the experience of trauma can show up in our relationship with food, eating and body image.

SE2 – Ep 3: Tips for navigating the holiday season

This week’s episode is a solo one with me. I wanted to put together something for everyone who missed the online workshop I did with Kristi last week. This time of year can be particularly challenging if you are trying to move away from dieting or are in eating disorder recovery. There are typically lots of food, social events (centred around food & alcohol) and we might spend more time with family than what we normally do.

This can amplify all of the typical challenges you have around food, eating and body image. So to give you some suggestions for how to navigate this I made this episode.
I am also answering two listener questions. If you have a question you would like me to answer anonymously just drop me an email to linn@straightforwardnutrition.com with the heading QUESTION.

And I leave you with another question to ponder: What would it be like if you don’t start a new diet in January? How might this influence your food choices over the next couple of weeks?

Finally thank you for being a supporter and listener to The Joyful + Nourishment Podcast. It is inching closer to 1000 downloads.
Not that numbers matters but to me it means that there are people out there how are listening and hopefully it is making even a little difference in how you navigate food and body image stuff.

The last episode of 2023 will be live on the 29th of Dec and it is another guest episode, not to be missed!

As we are now in December... Here is a novel thought. You don't have to crash diet for the holiday season.

Or any other season for that matter!

We often think that we just need to get better at restricting or dieting or just finding the "right" diet that we can stick to forever.

Or maybe you think that there is something inherently wrong with you?

I promise you, you are not broken or bad or faulty. Neither is your body.

Restriction drives binge eating, because being able to go for long times without food, is not conducive to survival.

Your body is wise. 🍎

Here with a little

Your body will need food today, even if you feel like you "ate loads" or "too much" over the weekend.

Your body knows how to handle food and it also needs food consistently day in, day out in order to function well.

Compensation for food eaten is not a helpful behaviour when trying to have a peaceful relationship with food, eating and your body.
