We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Mark Dixon, a visionary leader, researcher, and passionate educator who played a pivotal role in advancing pre-hospital emergency care education and clinical practice in Ireland.
Mark was instrumental in developing degree-level education for Paramedics, launching Ireland’s first Paramedic BSc, and helping to establish the foundation for professional recognition and academic excellence within our field. Through his work with the University of Limerick School of Medicine, he inspired countless Paramedics, EMTs, and educators to strive for higher standards in evidence-based practice, critical thinking, and patient-centred care.
His pioneering research and advocacy in spinal motion restriction reshaped national practice and thinking, encouraging a move toward a more clinically reasoned and patient-focused approach. Mark’s work reminded us that progress in pre-hospital care must always be grounded in both science and compassion.
Mark’s influence continues to live on through every student, tutor, and practitioner who benefits from the knowledge and professional framework he helped build. His passion for innovation and education will remain a guiding light for all of us committed to improving patient outcomes and advancing pre-hospital care.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to Mark’s family, friends, colleagues, and the entire paramedicine community. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations of EMTs, Paramedics, and educators in Ireland and beyond.
