Patients who are presenting to Mercy University Hospital Cork Emergency Department are unfortunately experiencing lengthy waiting times to be seen.

Where possible Mercy University Hospital advises patients with non-emergency conditions to seek assistance from other parts of the health service - your GP or Local Injury Unit.

Thank you Rachel πŸ’™

This time last year Rachel O'Regan from Skibbereen ran her first full marathon to raise funds for cancer research and in support of her mum. Thanks to the support of family, friends and her community, Rachel crossed the finish line of Dublin City Marathon having completed 42km and raising an amazing €7,966.75 for the Mercy Hospital Foundation.

Sadly, Rachel's mother Hester passed away in December 2024 and is greatly missed by all who loved her. The donation Rachel has made in Hester's memory will support advanced care and offer hope to patients and their families in the Mercy University Hospital Cork.

Thank you Rachel πŸ‘

Temporary Visitor Restrictions

Mercy University Hospital Cork has temporarily closed its facilities to general visitors, effective immediately. This decision has been made on the advice of the hospital's Infection and Control Team to safeguard the health and well-being of patients and staff.

We understand the importance of family support during a patient's stay. Therefore, visiting on compassionate grounds and in particular circumstances to support patients can be arranged directly through the Ward Clinical Nurse Manager.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation during this time as we continue to prioritise patient safety.

About Us

Mercy University Hospital (MUH) was established by the Mercy Order in 1857 as a 40-bed hospital staffed by four Sisters. Today, the hospital has 314 beds, employs approximately 1,000 staff and has an annual budget of approximately €90m. MUH offers a wide range of specialities which provide inpatient, day patient and outpatient services along with a 24/7 emergency department and an urgent care centre which is located on St. Mary's Health Campus. The hospital is a Catholic voluntary acute general hospital which is still owned by the Sisters of Mercy and which became a limited company in 2003. The hospital is a registered charity and operates as a not-for-profit entity. MUH is part of the South / South West Hospital Group which serves a current population of approximately 870,000 people.

The hospital has expanded rapidly both in terms of facilities and accommodation, since 1857. Over the last 20 years in particular, MUH has undergone very significant capital development allowing it to relocate its public wards into a new building and allowing further development of various specialities within the hospital, including a 50-bed acute psychiatric unit, pathology and clinical pharmacology units, endoscopy suites, medical oncology unit, coronary care unit, acute geriatric assessment unit, men's health unit, new emergency department, an acute medical admissions unit, a pre-assessment clinic, POLAR unit (with National Rehabilitation Hospital), an acute stroke unit and two new state of the art CT scanners.

Mercy University Hospital also provides a number of outreach services to the community in areas such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy.

MUH is a teaching hospital affiliated with the South / South West Hospital Group's academic partner - University College Cork (UCC) and participates in the medical undergraduate training programme. The hospital also supports students completing the four-year BSc nursing programme with the provision of clinical placement coordinators, preceptors and facilitates a positive clinical learning environment. The hospital's Centre of Nurse Education facilitates post graduate education for hospital staff and also supports the wider region.
