Today is Day and August is ectopic pregnancy awareness month. Never did I think that such a day would be so important to me.
1 in 80 pregnancies are ectopic and I am that one.
Ectopic pregnancy is common life threatening condition and is the leading cause on maternal death in the first trimester. And so not only does it bring grief, but it can be extremely traumatic. Even though I was lucky enough to have my ectopic pregnancy treated conservatively, the trauma I experienced was like nothing I’ve endured before. The loss of your baby and also the risk to your life.
I have shared my experience of ectopic pregnancy in the hope that someone might feel a little less alone if they’re going through it. But also, had I known more about it, I would have advocated for myself a little better and hopefully if more people are aware of it, they can seek medical attention sooner rather than later. Sharing our stories and experiences have the potential to save a life.
Unfortunately the symptoms aren’t always clear cut and although I knew something was wrong, I didn’t necessarily 100% fit the picture.
My symptoms were
-left sided abdominal pain around the time my period was due. It was tender to touch
-a lighter “period” that lasted less than 2 days- lighter in flow and colour, more watery.
-I had two negative pregnancy tests. By the time I had a positive one I think I was about 9 weeks pregnant
-I did not have any shoulder tip pain, nausea, diarrhoea.
But I still had an ectopic pregnancy. If you feel something isn’t right- seek help. Get it checked. You know your body best.
