Bernadette McFadden Counselling Services

Bernadette McFadden Counselling Services Counsellor MACI MIACP working in addiction residential treatment and private practice Cork. Studied EMDR Ireland and Somatic Experiencing Belfast.

In my clinical practice I believe the most important aspect of therapy is the relationship between client and therapist. Therefore, I offer congruence, kindness, acceptance, warmth, non-judgement, empathy and trust. With these Rogerian qualities the relationship with the therapist becomes a corrective experience for the client. My intention is to create a safe and protective space where the person or group can feel more at ease, have space in their body and heart and through felt sense explore ways to be kind, compassionate and reconnect to themselves. I believe the act of forgiveness toward oneself is a key factor for any kind of recovery of the self. We work in collaboration to be with what needs to be seen, to be heard and to be witnessed. With these conditions in place I trust what will emerge and as a result the person gains awareness, clarity, understanding, ease which allows for the development of the capacity to tolerate and be with their suffering in a new way knowing they are not alone. The individual can achieve a sate of self-leadership and healing. I work with a vast range of complex issues such as early development trauma, addiction issues with alcohol, substances, behavioral, depression, anxiety, loss/bereavement relationship/family/work, and dual diagnosis. In the specialised field of addiction counselling you don’t just treat addiction you end up treating anxiety, depression, PTSD, loneliness, rage,
despair, undiagnosed trauma, and untreated ADHD. As an integrative therapist I draw upon varied frameworks some of which include Person Centered approach, Attachement theory, Internal Family Systems (IFS) psychotherapy, Mindfulness (MBSR), Transactional Analysis (T.A), Motivational Interviewing (MI) Cognitive Behavorial Therapy (CBT) Attachment Theory and Psychoanalysis and am currently taking further training with Somatic Experiencing (SE) Ireland. An additional therapeutic approach I incorporate into my counselling practice is the work of Hellingers constellation work. This draws from systemic family therapy which involves representing family members or significant relationships through physical or symbolic representations. This method allows client to gain insights and resolve intergenerational trauma. Drawing from these different therapeutic approaches, I tailor my interventions to meet specific needs of each client and create a more effective and holistic counselling experience.

Wonderful work of J.Mike Fields

1. "The child within… doesn't disappear."

You can banish your emotions, but you cannot erase them. The child you left behind, the one who carried grief, anger, joy, or need, still lives in you. They hide in the shadows, waiting for your return.

2. "They grow into your fears, addictions, obsessions, and numbness."

Abandoned parts don't vanish; they adapt. They show up as anxiety, cravings, overwork, compulsions, or flatness. These aren't random symptoms; they're the cries of the exiled child still yearning for love and recognition.

3. "They are not your enemy."

The parts you resist, your fear, your addiction, your avoidance, are not here to destroy you. They're here to get your attention. They are signs, not threats.

4. "They are your key to aliveness, love, and Self."

The very child you abandoned carries the missing piece of your wholeness. When you return to them, witness, nurture, and integrate, you unlock vitality, intimacy, and freedom. The doorway to the Self is guarded by the parts you've feared most.

'The highest and most decisive experience of all is to be alone with one’s own self, or whatever else one chooses to call the objectivity of the psyche. The patient must be alone if he is to find out what it is that supports him when he can no longer support himself. Only this experience can give him an indestructible foundation. .'
